I live in WA, and have been pulled over by the twice in the last 2 weeks by the same officer telling me (more sternly the 2nd time) to get a bumper on my 80. I was just wondering of anyone knew if it is illegal to not have one?

A bit of irony in this one considering a truck bed is like 6 feet of bumper...=/

Here is the answer to your question.

WAC 204-10-022 Body requirements
(6) Bumpers: A motor vehicle must be equipped with a bumper on both the front and rear of the vehicle with the exception of motor vehicles where the original or predominant body configuration, provided by a recognized manufacturer, did not include such bumper or bumpers in the design of the vehicle. For the relevant model year, bumpers must accommodate recognized manufacturer impact absorption systems pursuant to applicable SAE Bumper Standards or equivalent standard.

You should move to Oregon. We don't have that crazy law. LOL

So is a roll pan considered a useable part of an impact absorption system?

Legal or not, many LUV's were sold without a a rear bumper.

The cop harassing you was probably born after the LUV era. LOL!

Or just one them that has not much to do. Like here in Wyoming who nitpick everything. I have to refab my phantom billet bumper to include the front plate now living here, but the 15 years I ran without one in Colorado, never got hassled once.

Wonder what that cop does with the SS 10's, the regular S10's came with a bumper but the SS's had the roll pan option which the majority of them had like mine (its a law in both states).

He probably wouldn't like this either.

In California anything registered as a commerical vehicle is not required to have a bumper.

Before I started bagging my '78 I drove it around with no bumpers at all lol. Only two things I was bothered for was having no front plate and not using my turn signal. I drove that thing in almost every county in western Wa without any issues.

Just for the fun of it if a cop pulls you over about a rear bumper ask him how to but a bumper on a truck that didn't come with one then politely show him (if you still have it ) the license plate mount that is bolted to the bed that would be covered up with a bumper installed. Like the one on my 80 4X4
