this older couple bought a place up the road from me the owner died. and they got it and their cleaning up the yard. said he just collected junk so they were ditching it did a walk thru w/the old man saw 2 350's asked how much he said $75 so i looked a li'l closer at them the valve covers say 350 target master.called my buddy the engine guru he said it's probably a marine motor higher compression
he had some datsun 620 $500 for all 5 or 6. not bad but ain't a LUV but might grab the '77 extended cab shortbed.
finally fell into bed of roses it might be a small bed but still a bed. lol

The Targetmasters I have seen are not high compression. They are the 3 year 36.000 mile replacement engines GM used to (may still) sell. All the ones I have had had dished pistons, some were 4 bolt mains. If the blocks are salvageable, that's definitely a good price...

I've known a couple of target 350's to flatten cams in 20,000 miles. But this was 20-25 years ago.

yeah the 350's can be saved i was planning to rebuild anyways since they sat so long.
i decided to get the '77 kingcab to go w/the luv then i figure i'd have the 2 coolest body styles of the 70's minitrucks

I always liked the early Datsun Kingcabs. It doesn't give you a lot of extra room. It is a shame the Luv didn't have one.
We ran a Target Master in my son's Street Truck with a little racing for 2 years Then my friend put it in a Bracket car and ran for 1 season. It is sitting on the floor of my buddys shop . So it the truck.. 85 GMC stepside. He will do something with it sooner or later. He put a ZZ4 engine in the bracket car. It is on it's 3rd or 4th season as a foot brake car.

since you've got 1st hand expierence w/the target master
how do they run as far as stock? better than reg. 350 or any probs w/them?

We never had a problem. Edledbrock intake, holly carb, Modified MSD with Acell stuff, Hooker headers. It actually was a Canadian GMG with a 6cyl engine, 411 and positrac rearend. I don't remember what it ran, 1/8 mile track close to our house, 20 mile. Lonestar Motor Sports track. I'll have to check with my son on times and such... It's been 6 years or so ago. Us old farts can't remember shit...

Well I got to looking things up. It was not a Target Master engine, at least they didn't call that anymore. It was the 350 290hp crate engine... My bad. 24 month warranty. It was basically a long block and we add the rest. I didn't find receipt on the engine, just some of the other stuff. I bought some stuff from autoz@ne and still have that. Life time warranty stuff.I cheated, my son worked at one then.

I do remember that GM even had target master automatic transmissions. I know we put a few in engines back when I did that stuff for a living and don't remember any coming back, that would have pissed me off as I worked on commission . The reman engines we used were real good and they stood behind their engines. But some people didn't want a reman engine.
