 Post subject: 1.8 Question
PostPosted: Mon May 19, 2003 9:29 pm
Alright guys, got a question. A buddy of mine was wanting to know what the major differences are, if any, between the early 75 and back and later 76 and newer 1.8 engines. He will be using an early one for a swap he is planning. Will a later 1.8 head and valve train work with an earlier block? Are there any major differences to be aware of?
Thanks. :D

I think on one of the earlier heads, the intake and exhaust manifolds are on the same side of the block. Someone else who knows more about the earlier ones than I may confirm or disprove what I have said, though...

NO!!!! Nothing will swap between the 2 motors except maybe the carb and distributor. The 2 motors are of different designs and the early motor was a lump of crud. The later motor is a better design but it still wont take too much in modifying for power. if your going with a stock block, go with the later motor.

The motor mounts are also in different places, just to make it more fun. A 76 or newer motor is not a simple bolt in replacement on a 75 or older truck.

Thanks, for the info. The 75 block and 4spd is not goin into a Luv, rather a freebie 74 MG Midget MKIII that originally came with a 1.3 . The power of a stock 75 1.8 is a fairly large HP upgrade from the original Brit 1.3. Its weird I know to have a Jap powered Brit car but its all about free or dirt cheap car and drivetrain included. I will be looking for cheap 72-75 head and intake, etc(wholetopend really) in Texas area. Thanks
