I just picked up a pretty decent shape Mikado dome light from WildLuvRacing1974 and I am wondering what you guys have done to try and help protect the cover and keep it from becoming brittle and falling apart? Any little tips or tricks? I was wondering about spraying a light coat of clear spray paint on it maybe? Any ideas are welcome.

Its the heat from the globe that turns them brittle, replace the bulb with a L.E.D type. The clear coat is a good idea also, make sure the solvents in the clearcoat wont eat it.

I figured the heat in the truck in the Summer would also be the contributing factor to the dome light getting brittle. I am sure the light heat does it as well, but the light usually isn't on for very long. But most likely just all of the above and just many many years cause it. I wondered about how the paint would affect the plastic, that is why I figured I would ask some questions first before I try anything. Maybe even some polish on it or protectant would be just as good? I also am thinking about trying some black shoe polish on the window gaskets to see if that will shine them up like new and help keep it from drying out? I can use STP Son of a Gun or Armor All on it all day and it will just soak it up. I was wondering the same with the shoe polish, if the chemicals in the polish would deteriorate the rubber? I think I am going to give it a try on my firewood truck first and see what it does over time. If there are any other products that would work, let me know.

I would definitely do that if I could find a place that would do it and keep them low cost. If it would be anything like molds for rubber items such as shifter boots, then it might not be worth it. For the companies to make the mold for you it is probably a couple thousand. I had actually contacted a couple rubber manufacturers last year and was going to see about getting shifter boots made, but after I found out the costs I gave up on the idea. The boots would be pretty expensive as well. If I knew there was enough demand I would go for it. Now with the lens covers the price might be much cheaper since they are smaller. I will do a little research on this and see what I can find out.

Thanks for letting me know. I may try it when the time comes for it to go in the truck. I haven't checked into getting new ones made yet, but will when I get a chance. I know they also make a little kit to restore your plastic headlights when they get scuffed up over time, I wonder if that would also work on the dome lights?
