Now I just need something to practice on since I haven't welded much and it has been a few years. :) Now maybe it will get me motivated to redo the LUV!!

It is a 3200 HD which I think it is something sold only to Home Depot. I could be wrong but that is the only place that I have seen them and none of the guys at the 2 gas shops have heard of it. A guy I work with part times at Home Depot and gave me a pretty good deal on it since I get him deals on parts for his truck! Still haven't got the gas yet, I didn't realize a bottle was that expensive!! I would have got one Friday but need to find a way to get it home without killing myself! I am going with a CO2/argon mix.

What does the co2 do differently than argon?

have you checked into leasing the bottle? thats what i do for my torch tanks. cost me $50 bucks a year. and as for getting them home....i haul mine in the back of my cav..just make sure the caps are on and strap them down.
you shouldnt have a problem w/ the law either b/c both co2 and argon are non-flammable gases.

they say nothing other than it just doesn`t weld as nice. its cheaper for co2 than argon thats why they suggest it. we run the co2 argon mix at work . it works very well i think the mix we use is 75% argon o 25% co2. we tried straight co2 on my brothers welder we weren`t to impressed with it. maybe you have to do different things to get it to work better.

Well, I figure it is better for me to buy the bottle as then I just switch them every time I need a refill only only have the one time fee. As for the argon/co2 mix. the guy told me that the co2 cool around the weld (of course) and the argon helps make the puddle a little bigger and uniform. So running straight co2, the weld won't be as good and with straight argon, the weld would be great but have a more likely chance of warping.
Hey Larp, did you strap yours down laying on its side or standing up. The guys at the shop almost started arguing with each other if you could lay it down or not, I was thinking that you shouldn't lay it down but I don't know???

argon and co2 (and o2 for that matter) dont hurt them to lay on thier sides. acetylene shouldnt be layed down tho. b/c it can build up pure acetone and cuase it to become unstable.

the way i haul mine in the car. (remember this is MAYBE once a year) is lay the o2 horzontial in the back, then brace the acetylene bottle up with a peice of railroad tie under the top to keep it elevated.
i dont use the full size tanks either.

Dude, if you get in with a local supply place, they should rent you the gas at a price. You should be able to get in for no more than a bill. The bottle will always remain theirs but who cares! You are just interested in the contents right?

that looks like a nice welder, i'm planning on buying either a lincoln or miller arc welder this summer. once i learned how to weld, i don't ever want to pay for somebody else to do it for me! i'm planning on taking welding classes in the fall at the local college, and probably going into that field :)

Just an update, still haven't used the dam thing!! Was planning last Saturday but woke up to 6" of snow!! I did get a 40 cubic foot bottle filled for $85 from a place that is on the way home from work. That was cheaper than any other place wanted for just the bottle!! 8O Hopefully I can fire it up this weekend.
