I was wondering what some of you do for insuring your Luvs that are fixed up and/or restored. I have full coverage on my 79, but if some clown runs a red light and totals it, State Farm will only give me what a 79 Luv is worth, which is under 1,000 bucks. I understand I need to have a private appraisal done on it, but am not sure if they will do a truck like this since most of the appraisers I have seen sound like they mainly do high dollar classics. I would be interested to know how other Luv owners are handling this and what would be an accurate amount to shoot for in an appraisal. Also, if anybody else has had an appraisal done on theirs, I'd like to here how it turned out. I need to do something before long, because I don't like driving it underinsured. Any knowledge on this subject would be appreciated.

go stated... that means they will insure for the price you think it is worth say $5000 or $10,000 and you pay insurance based on your value of the truck... my AAA does it and I am sure others do also... I just haven't done it yet, not till frame off then i will

I have State Farm and a few years ago had to change agents as mine had retired. I asked the new agent that same question as I have 2 trucks in that same dilema. All I had to do is give them a price I thought they were worth, pics of all my mods with as many reciepts as I had for all the work and parts and they are now covered for the full values. 8) I thought it was going to make my rates go way up but both of them went up no more than $20 a year. 8) 8) I asked why they didnt go up that much and they said they look at it like, the people who drive these kinds of vehicles drive more carefully and less often than normal cars, thus less likely to get in an accident!! I was happy! 8) 8) 8)

About 5 years ago I had completed a 1989 mustang 5.0 project. It was a street/strip car. Best of everything....H-beam rods, forged pistons, arp engine bolts, aluminum heads, gear drive, msd billit distributor, rebuilt C-4 trans, rebuilt rear end with 4.11 gears....It was sweet. It ran 12.30's on street legal mickeys. I went back to school and had no time to play so I decided to sell it. I parked it at a local speed shop where I used to work only to get a call a few weeks later telling me it was gone!!!!! Stolen and I never heard from it again. I had over 12 thousand invested and State Farm gave me $2600.00. So yes, please insure your car for what you think it's worth. Ironically, I was only asking $7000.00 to get rid of it, so If I had insured it for 12K, whoever stole it would have done me a favor!!!! That experience put a bad taste in my mouth and I did not want to hear the words " hot rod, racing, cars, trucks, rebuild, project car, drag racing etc........ since then!!! Not until recently that I aquired a 1980 chevy luv. It was the chevy luv that was my first vehicle at age 16. So I recovered from the robbery but will be smart when I finish this truck. It will not be a race truck however. It will be a Sunday cruzer with air conditioning!!! Live well, Insure well!! Scott

Plan to insure mine, "for what it's worth", just as soon as I can get a Geico appraiser to come look at it.

I have been fixing up custom street rides for a long time, and I have always taken pictures of all of the customizing, fabrications, and mods, plus estimated my time, and also included the price of everthing that I added to the vehicle before I head to the insurance office.

I have known plenty of people throughout all of the years that have went for the cheapest insurance they could find,(or none), and were cying their eyes out big time when their vehicle got wrecked or stolen.

My suggestion would be to do a comprehensive video of your truck, copy your reciepts for everything, add up the amount of hours you have worked on it, and after you make yourself a backup copy of everything, then hand that all over to the insurance company to determine it's replacement value. They will make a file on your vhicle that will save your butt big time if anything bad happens.

If you consider the amount you have spent, the amount of fabricating and customizing you have done, and the amount of hours you have put in working on it even at minimum wage, you would be very surprized to see what the actual replacement value of your truck is actually worth.

And if you tell the insurance company's agent that you only occasionally drive it only on sunny days, that it is not a daily driver, and that you always keep it garaged, then the insurance is much cheaper.

Bottom line...never under-insure anything or you are asking to inflict a real bad day on yourself.

Thanks to everyone for all the information. I will be visiting my State Farm agent with more info about this truck, and increase coverage, before I drive again. Appreciate all the help....
