Or at least my LUV thinks so...
So im driving in trafic maybe about 30mph. Im stopped at a light and i notice i smell hot oil, i look at my oil gage and its reading about 15psi. Now it usually runs at about 20psi unless im pushing it hard so i know something is not right. I then notice my temp gage is reading 220*(high temp thinning the oil more causing the lower reading...). So theres where the hot smell is coming from. I turn on the heater and it blows cold, so im out of coolant. I pull into a parkinglot and find the culprit. The heater hose right above my starter is leaking perty good. Now it is just right to where the coolant falls from the hose right to the ground. So thats why i never smelled coolant. Well i lock her up and walk about 3 blocks down and get a burger and relax weighing my options. Im about 8 blocks from base so i decide ill drive it. Well it made it back to base and as i shut it down at the dorms it was just about 230*-240*. So it should be alright, usually you dont have problems with quality gaskets untill you hit 250*. So wish me luck when i replace me heater hoses and see if my head gasket is blown... :?

Now see, if I pulled a stunt like that, you would kill me. And yet, you do this silly stuff all the time. What kind of role model are you?
Well, good luck! You need to be able to come home in September, and you can't spend all of your time on the luv. We've got real work to do!

well worst case scenario, the head gasket is blown. Ill have my dad drive over and we will tow the LUV back with the S-10. Then ill get everything tore down and take the head over to my dads buddy Don. Hell make shure everything is in spec and since the engine will be out ill replace all my gaskets and seals and my timing set since its kinda loosening up. It will be a days worth of work pulling it down and probly a day and a half putting it back together...

You didn't mention if you had any valve chatter. Valve chatter is a good indication that you've gone too far. If you didn't hear or feel any chatter, you're most likely safe (for now).

If you ever get a leak like that just fill her back up with water (engine running) and leave the cap off the radiator. The leak will be heaps less than what it was because the cooling system cant build up as much pressure.

You will probably find that its an inlet manifold off job to fix. The fitting in the manifold are only steel and they rot out.

Heres a how to fix article i did on my manifold.

My son got home from work on Tuesday and I saw coolant under the truck. I opened the hood and found no water in the system. I asked him about it and he said he didn't check anything but it was running hotter than normal on the way home.
Well, the radiator (which I had boiled out by a radiator shop while the truck was apart) has a hole in the core.
So I just stole the rad. out of the blue LUV for now and got the white one ready for work on Wednesday. Spare parts are handy.

Before i made it back to Texas, my buddy Mike already had a project for me to deal with. His sons Honda Accord was acting up. Mike was thinking it had bad ignition coils and the timing chain needed to be replaced. Mike was trying to diagnose the problem over the phone because he's on the road driving a semi.
I get there a half a day before Mike and check things out, that day it seemed to run fine. Mike's son Justin was trying to explain what the car was doing but he has next to no knowledge of modern automotive technology (the little girl). So he gets ready to leave and he begins to fill the radiator with water. His actions were so routine that i had to question this. He said that he has to do this all the time. I'm thinking ?????? So once he finished topping off the radiator, i started snooping around the motor. I could then see that there was water dripping heavily from the core support to the ground. I questioned Justin on this and he said it was runoff from when he just filled it. There was a noticable rust stain on the concrete from previous leaking and this was too much for being runoff.
The bottom tank of the radiator was leaking at the seam. This 20 year old kid couldn't figure this out. He drove it around until Mike had to take action to save the car. The reason he was having driving problems was because he was running out of water!

I wish that car would get stolen!

 When I was a little kid my parents had a 58 Chevy. The car for a while was basically my Mom's and my dad had not used the car for a while.
Then one Saturday he went someplace in it. When he got back he said,

"Why didn't you tell me the car has no brakes!"
She said,
" It has brakes, there's nothing wrong with them. You just have to pump them a few times and then they work fine".

My Dad about $hit and went out and fixed the car.
