My Mom of 60+ years of age owns a 1990 Chevy extended cab 4X4 truck. It's her pride and joy. Whenever it breaks, she say's "Fix it" and me and Dad get to it. She's got a CD changer full of country music, a sunscreen mural of horses running and floormats with horses on them. Mom drives it every day to 2 jobs and shopping. It's her workhorse.
But today, everything changed. Mom got into an accident. Her blood sugar level fell well below normal and couldn't maintain control of the truck. The truck drifted across opposing traffic and struck the corner of a brick building. The entire corner of the structure is demolished and the truck is going to be totalled. Mom didn't get a scratch on her. She took a ride to the hospital and she's seems to be ok. They're keeping her overnight for observation and it's almost certian that she'll come home tomorrow afternoon.
The 1990 Chevy 4X4 is a different story... The front left corner took the hit. 35 m.p.h. into the structure destroyed everything including the cab.

This truck served it's purpose... It kept Mom safe.

That make this the best 4X4 truck on the planet!

To Mom, it's like shooting "Old Yeller" after it protected her from a wolf made of brick.
It's likely that the state will pull her licence because it isn't safe for her to drive if she can have another episode with her sugar levels. Her age doesn't help matters either. I dont want her to drive anymore but i know it will crush her not having the independence of being able to go and do things as she pleases. Having Dad be in charge of getting her around will cause some friction to say the least. Mom will want to go about her business at her own pace and routine while Dad will inflict his take on how, when and why things should be done.
I wouldn't mind driving Mom around at all, at her pace and routine. I'll need to clean the interior of my C-1500 really well. She wont get in the LUV at all. It's too fast to suit her.

I agree. That was the best truck ever. It kept her safe. Sorry to hear, It sounds like some slight life style changes are coming to your family. I'm sure you guys will work it out.

Take your dad aside sometime soon and remind him not to drive her crazy, just think of what she is going through having to get a ride everywhere now and that he needs to remember to shut up and drive. He can run his errands his way. run her errands her way. :D
OH! and after you tell him that.... DUCK!!!!

BTW, I don't know what you will do with her truck now, but it might be really hard on her to see that truck, wrecked in your driveway every day. You might want to just let it go away, or if you part it out maybe do it someplace else.

The truck is at the body shop awaiting to be officialy totaled by the insurance company. I need to go there today and get all of Moms belongings from the truck.
Both my sister and i have told Dad that he has to cool it when it comes to Mom not driving anymore. Mom was more concerned about her truck than herself. She would get choked up when she mentioned the fact that it's ruined. I tried to ease the hit with saying that Ken over at the body shop does really good work and it's very possible that they can fix it up right (I lied). I didn't want her to concern herself with the truck at that point in time.
But Dad had to shoot his mouth off by saying "It doesnt matter anyways cause you're not gonna do any driving anymore". Dad has no bedside manner at all.
The plan is to make it to where Mom doesn't see the truck again. It will make her cry to see it. She didn't get to see the full extent of the damage.

Here's a pic of the truck.
I'm gonna miss it almost as much as Mom.

Damn  Well like everyone has already said"thank god shes okay"!!! As far as her driving, sounds to me like she needs to just get her blood sugar figured out with a certain diet, and she will be good to go!!!

Mom is doing just fine! The accident was on friday and she was back at work on monday. She already has her eye on a Ford F- series truck with 4 doors.
Thanks for the concern with Mom,

And for the record... Mom will never own or even drive a Geo. She'll scoff at the concept.

Mom has a truck again... A Ford F-150 extended cab 2WD,with the mini side doors. It's big and solid. Thats what i want to see. I just ordered a set of Westin running boards so Mom can get in and out of it easier. She's happy to have a truck again and im glad it has air bags. Im not a big fan of Fords (except when it comes to 9" axles) but that isn't an issue in this case. Mom can handle driving this easier than the 4X4 Chevy. The Triton V-8 should get better gas mileage on top of everything else.

So if you see a little old lady zipping down the road in a maroon-colored Ford truck, wave hello and give her some room. I'd be thankful to you...

Naw... The storm is a seperate article. It's a small town paper so it lacks the features of a big time newspaper.
Im still suprised that they can even get a website going...
