I just wanted to put up a quick post about this.

Someone out there has a worm virus on their computer and it keeps trying to email itself to me. This is characteristic of a worm, it will try to email itself to everyone in your address book.

I don't know who it is because of the other characteristic of a worm, it disquises itself and makes up a false address for the sender and a false subject line every time.

Some of these worms are getting pretty evasive and intelligent. Most of them aren't too hard to get rid of but it's sometimes difficult to know if you've been infected. My guess is that whomever it is out there that is sending it to me has no idea that they are infected.

My virus scanner keeps catching it so it's not a big deal. Just letting you guys know so maybe you can check your computers.

I think I just found out who it is. An email I just got actually had a recognizable name as the sender.

I sent the person in question a PM.

one hint I got was to add a contact in your addy book as 1alert. and set the email address as wormalert.
when the worm sends out all emails you will get the message that will tell you it is an incorrect email address......saying wormalert.....hope this helps.

I sure wish whoever it is would figure out their infected. I'm getting tired of receiving one or two virus' a day in my email. They all have exactly the same format so I'm sure their all from the same person.

They come from random, non-existant addresses. That's part of the worm's disguise so you can't figure out where they're coming from.

Every once in a while I get one that says it's from RATNLUV@msn.com, but he says his computer is clean. So it probably just someone out there that has RATNLUV in their address book. That's another thing the worm will do, pretend that it was sent by someone in your address book.

There's a little more information in the email header:

I traced the origin IP number and it comes up as:

WideOpenWest LLC WIDEOPENWEST (NET-65-60-128-0-1)
65.60.128.0 - 65.60.255.255
WIDEOPENWEST MICHIGAN WOW-MICH-3-136 (NET-65-60-136-0-1)
65.60.136.0 - 65.60.159.255
WIDEOPENWEST.COM (WIDEOPENWEST-DOM)
900 W Castleton Rd
CASTLE ROCK, CO 80104
US

So, who lives in Michigan?

<sigh>

I went back through some old ones and they appear to come from everywhere, San Francisco, Atlanta, Michigan. This little fucker is pretty dodgy.

I think the people that make these little worms should be hung in town center at high noon!

Anyway, out of the 40 or so I have, there seems to be only 4 IP numbers listed as origins. I doubt it will help, but I'll list them here just in case.

Well, I think whoever it is, it's not intentional. It's probably someone without a virus scanner.

The nature of this worm is to disguise itself. So, I can't say if it's you or not.

It's really just a minor inconvenience, but it's getting kinda old.

It's most likely not you then. The only way the worm can get an email address (mine in this case) is from your address book.
