 Post subject: why chevy pride?
PostPosted: Sat Jan 03, 2004 3:08 am
In looking through the LUV pictures I saw a few with chevy bowtie stickers on them and I have one question. Why would a LUV owner have chevy pride??? Afterall the LUV in reality is an Isuzu, it was designed by Isuzu and made in Japan by Isuzu and then a Chevy nameplate was slaped on it. This truck is in import, so why think of it as a Chevy? Why not buy an S10?

I debated with myself whether to answer this or not but here goes...
1. Although not everyone here has done it, alot of us have or had a Luv with a Chevy small block or big block.
2. It's not necessarily "Chevy Pride" alot of us have vehicles that are not Chevys.
3. Concerning the "stickers", I've seen Luvs with SS on them but there was never a Luv SS or RS, GT, EX, Si, Dx or Lx...it's just a sticker or airbrush.
4. Yes it was made by Isuzu, Harley went in a joint venture with Porsche for the V-Rod motor but it's still a Harley.
5. Why not an S10?
A. Actually thought about it, but I like the body lines more on the Luv, just more style.
B. We are all masochists who enjoy painfully searching for unavailable parts
C. We like repairing rust spots.
D. We spell slapped with two p's not one.

If your question was honest curiosity disregard D. if you're being dick, go be one somewhere else.

I have a S-10 for a daily driver.
The Luv draws more attention and is easier to put a big block in.
The Luv is also smaller and weighs less and you don't see as many of them.
Most of the ones you see are in bad shape so when you see one fixed up you notice it.
I have had people walk past a nice S-10 to look at my unfinished Luv at a cruise in.
S-10's are everywhere and half the people call mine a S-10 anyway.
My tags ran out new years eve and I am thinking of changing to NOTAS10 because RATNLUV seems to go over peoples head unless they are old like me.
I think because people put chevy engines in is reason enough to put the chevy sign on them.
I put a 350 in a Mustang and they put a Chevy bow tie in the back window.

How many of your S10's parts are made in the U.S.A.? And why have S10 pride- its just a GMC w/ a Chevy logo slapped on it.

I bet this post will get some hackles up, but I'll try to avoid the troll factor and just answer the question. For me, its all about the style. S10s just don't have the right lines to appeal to me, same applies to the last year LUVs even. They are just kinda boring. I like the classic look of a mid-late 70s LUV a lot better, so an S10 just isn't going to cut it.

As for the Isuzu Inside arguement, a lot of the tech in the S10 was taken right out of what GM learned from the LUV. Hell, S10s came with Isuzu motors in the early years. From the early 70s until just recently GM owned much of Isuzu. A lot of things were shared between models, the same 2.8L V6 found in S10s was powering Isuzu Troopers in the late 80s and early 90s. Those rigs were more Chevrolet than Isuzu in some ways, but they came with an Isuzu badge on the front. If import is such a dirty word, watch where you point it. A lot of GM V8s came out of Mexico, but you don't call them import motors do you?

Bottom line, LUVs came from the Chevrolet dealer, Chevrolet put their name on it and a bowtie on the grill. They thought enough of it to just adopt the truck without changes and call it their own. Why not drive an S10? Why drive a GM copy of an Isuzu idea when you can drive the original and still have the title say Chevrolet?

Hmm when I clicked on this thread i really didn't know what to expect. But since it is about spilling how much we LUV our LUV's...i definetly had to type something!!! But back in the day...well a couple years ago, i never had much respect for chevy's. Yup i know but that was just how it was! I was a die-hard ford man the whole way....still am, but the LUV is what changed my opinion on them!

Even though the LUV is not made in North America, and not really made by Chevy all together...it is still one awesome little truck! Small blocks fit just nicely in them..big blocks...well there's a bit more work with those.... So here we got a chevy powered chevy....seems like a chevy too me?! Right?? Well I got domestic power, in a domesticlly badged vehicle......that convinces me of some domestic poperties anyways!

Why not buy an S10? Well i got a question for you....why not buy a LUV? It really comes down to what your preference is! In all reality it has they two vehicles have the same thing going for them.
1) Economical engines. (except those with SBC's and BBC's)
2) Small, compact vehicles....easy to drive in town
3) Designed to haul light loads
The list goes on....

Oh and diarmadhim is right...we like repairing rust spots!

i try not to bias myself against any manufacturer too much, if i like the vehicle, why the hell shouldn't i own it? i can remember once incident where i got ridiculed by a friend's parents for driving a toyota..."how come i didn't buy something american?" well, their chevy was made in mexico, they should have asked themselves first

to make things short, i'll buy anything i want. i'm not gonna let some idiotic rivalry between gm/ford/dodge/toyota/nissan/isuzu get to me

why do i like my luv?
Well back in the day we had an 89 S-10 4x4 whith a 2.8L v-6. My dad sold the S-10 after owning it for 1 year becouse in his eyes the LUV was a better work truck (mostly becouse it was ALOT more simple in design and easy to work on). I like it becouse it it is underpowered, thus a joy to drive in bad weather. The gearing in it then makes up for the lack of motor power, if it has to it will pull like a tractor. I get good millage in a small easy to handle package. And it looks cooler i think.

Next time you don't want to get treated like a prick, ask your question a little more politely. I think all of the answers were pretty laid back considering the way in which you asked. I wouldn't go to an S10 board & ask why they have pride in thier rides- having pride in what you drive is to be expected at a LUV only (or S10 only) community.

Welcome to the board.

Not sure what category you've put me into but, it would seem you were just curious. It really would be easier in many ways to own an S10. We for our own reasons like the Luv, it's not bad or good it's just a preference.
The one thing I think all of us here don't want, is for this site to degrade into one like some of the other forums. This site is the best resource I have found for my truck and I for one would like to keep it that way.
It really did sound like you were just trying to start shit.

by the way...welcome to the site...helluva first post!

I was trying to be a dick and I succeeded. Why post something so stupid as to why we like something. If we didn't like it, we wouldn't A: own one, B: subscribe to an enthusiasts forum. Don't post stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers. So fuck me.

i knowthat i just got a luv so i am not as die hard as you guys, but look at it this way s-10, if you owned a chevy luv, and you wanted to put some brand related stickers on it, what would you put on it? isuzu stickers, probablly not. why not an s-10? well i got my luv for free, can you find a s-10 that cheap? like my granpa used to say, if every man in the world was the same, it would be hell on one woman.

Well S-10 I have to say first Welcome! I can understand your question but, and in all honesty you did come off a little rude, but no bigie I guess it's in some peoples nature  Anyway I would just like to add my two pennies by saying I have owned an S-10 I bought one new back in 92 and I loved it, it was a fun truck to have and work on. Well I sold it a few years later and have owned many other trucks and cars some imports and domestics but it seems to me that all of them in one way or another are tied to another company in some way shape or form.
I mean I remember when the first GEO trackers came out..... and now what are they you might ask??? they are Chevy Trackers, I mean it just goes to show that they were popular and then Chevy got the idea to jump on it and make them with a Chevy bowtie on it.
I for one really enjoy my truck....even though it is up for sale (not by choice) it is easy to work on, very simplistic in design and alot of fun to drive and the funny thing is I agree with Ratnluv many people have just walked straight past other nicer looking trucks to ask about mine, and my truck is far from being a show truck  Well I know that I have rambled on enough I hope you can enjoy the site regardless.
Later
Husker

Well, Most of us have had both S-10's and Luv's.. I had a 82 and a 97 S-10's prior to my Luv's... They are both awesome trucks.. But i think it does come down to the lines... And the sheer numbers of tricked out Luv's... And the ability to swap out engines, and the reliablity of them..

Well hell, We just Luv them....
