well, theres a been kind of a change of plans for the truck. i found some new body parts for cheap, so it gonna be time for a "nicer" paint job.

i plan on paintin the truck with some gloss black rustoleum. ive seen a few other thing painted with this stuff and they looked pretty damn good.

anyways, what do i need to do to the paint to make it ready to spray? what about hardeners and activators and stuff like that?

now im not a total fool about paint. me and lee painted his toyota back in the day, but that paint was already mixxed and thats stuff.

i just need some tips and pointers for when im ready to make the paint fly.

If it's the Rustoleum I'm thinking of then it'll be a rattle can job, no need for hardners activaters or any of that other stuff. just do a good job of preping the body (wipe it down, sanding, etc..) and lay the stuff on in even coats, letting it dry properly between coats and all that good stuff

Some paints are different then others so you should ask them or look on the back of the can... I am thinking even though its in a can you wont need anything... it air dries but if that is the case and its going threw the spray gun then thin it down to a milky consistency usually 50/50 if you need catalyst follow this rule of thumb… most paint I will do 2/2/1..... that’s 2 Dixie cups paint ,2 thinner and 1 of catalyst.... if its cold when you paint you may want a fast thinner the will helps it flash off faster a dry a little faster

lol, thought I was the only one painting my truck with Rustoleum. I am using the cans though. I am doing 2 coats of primer first and then 2 coats of paint. I was going to use a coat of clear too, but the can said 2 coats of paint or one coat of paint and one or 2 light coats of clear. I have only painted the one door jamb and the cowl and valance so far with the gloss black and it does look pretty good.

I used Van Sycle implement paint on my frame. I used the sherwin williams gloss and glow urethane hardner with it. it will make it hold it's shine longer and harden better.
I can almost guarantee Rustoleum will be the same and if you don't use a catalyst it will lose it's shine over a period of time. It also will not harden like auto paint and have the durability
Also if you want a smooth job you need to spray it with a sparay gun.

I had a friend tell me that he used True Value's Rust-O-whatever brand paint (same as in the rattle cans) to paint a few rigs. He just cut it 50/50 with Lacquer (sp?) thinner. He said it goes down a little thick. I saw the Nova he painted, it didn't look to bad. I think the paint's only bout' $35.00 a gallon. I'll even be a pall and let you experiment on my truck first!!!

yeah i think all the rusto brands are about the same. I mixed mine 50/50 and used the 8/1 hardner. I even used my regular acrylic enamel paint reducer to thin it. Sprays on nice and dried to a very nice shine. I still think using the hardner is the key to longevity.
