So I bought this locking gas cap off ebay, and the description says 77-82 chevy luv. Its a Stant, and I called the parts store to refrence the number on the package. I told him I needed one for a 79. Anyway, he gives me the same number that is on the cap I bought right. Well its to big. I took it over to D's house to try on his truck, and its the same deal, to big. So WTF, has anybody had this problem, and does anybody know if there are diffrences between gas filler port sizes? THANKS T. --- P.S--- I now have a NEW locking gas cap for sale

The filler neck is different, 72-76 use one and 77-80 use another. I went to swap the locking cap off my 76 to my 79 and found the same problem. I forget which is smaller for sure, I think the older ones. Sounds to me like you've got a 75-76 bed (or filler neck assembly) on a 79 truck. How many hooks on the side rails of your bed? 76 usually had 4, newer had 3.

81-82 use a different part number of cap according to the book, but I don't know if it will fit either of the older trucks. Diesel uses a different cap yet again too, tho I bet it is a vented vs non-vent thing.

There was 4 on each side. Im so confused with the year of my truck. Pink says 72 and that matches the numbers on the dash. But I had to buy parts for a 79 when I had the 4 banger in it. The bed has the long tail lights on the sides. So I am not sure what friggin year all this stuff is

Sounds like you got the Johnny Cash version of the LUV, 'its a 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79 automobile....'

I was going to convert half of my 79 back to two headlights for a while, so I'd have 'one on the left and two on the right, but when we pulled out the switch all three of em come on'

Sounds like you have the older neck, your bed is probably a 75 or 76. I'll look to be sure tomorrow and let you know which is the big one. When you had a four banger was it the one with the intake and exhaust both on the same side? If not you might have a 72 cab on a 79ish frame, with a 75 or 76 bed behind it. You could convert the older frame to hook to a newer style crossflow head motor, but it would take reworking motor mounts so I doubt most people would go to that much trouble. [/quote]
