I slept thru it. All i know is what was on the news. My guess is structual failure. It's an old piece of equipment and it can only take so much. I guessed correctly on the o ring failure of the challenger disaster. But i figured the problem was in a fuel line, not as part of a booster.

It came apart over Texas as it was comming into land in Florida. There's debris all over east Texas. People are showing up at hospitals with burns because they picked up pieces of the shuttle.

BTW, the "big boom" that their talking about on TV is nothing new to people that have been around when the shuttle lands. It always makes a sonic boom which shakes all the windows as it's coming in.

Just thought it was funny how people being interviewed were talking about the "boom" as though it was part of the accident or the sound of the shuttle exploding.

I was in Vegas this weekend and actually didn't find out about it until this morning when we happened to turn on the news.

I hate that fact that all of those people died. None of them deserved it. Unfortunately, it seems that the sequence of events that lead up to the destruction could have been avoided. It's just too bad. There very nature of the shuttle's launch and landing procedure makes small problems become large deadly ones real quick.

Yes it's unfortunate it turned out the way it did. There is always the risk of catastrophic falure every time anyone is sent into space. There is no back up plan to bring them home safely. But the idea of being able to go into space far outweighs the risk. If they had a shuttle ready to go today, and there was an open seat, I along with millions of other people would jump at the chance to take the voyage in to space. All thats left is to find out what went wrong, make the appropiate measures to insure that it wont happen again. The space program will not end . There's too much to be learned out there. The Columbia crew knew this all too well. God bless the crew of Columbia.

knowing what they know now, the next time they see some tiles come off the fuel tank and smack the crap out of the wing- cause I seen it and thats what it did- they will leave the people up and launch some other craft to pick thenm up. The space program HAS to have an emergency plan for that.
