use a 1967 or later "large journal" 327 block and crank. 1962 -66 are small journal and use different rods. Large journal motors have parts that are common to the 350's and thus easier to find

definately the later large jornal. the small jornal has very skimppy rod bolt .besides if you wanted after market rods for it they are easier to come buy.

1969 is the best 327. The large journal 327's were only built in part of 1968 and all of 1969. If they were originally 300 horsepower or above, there's a good chance of finding a steel crank in it.

The large journal 327 will usually carry these casting #'s
3914638 (1968 truck)
3932386 (hi perf, also used for 302 Camaro & 350")
3933180
3956618 (can be hi perf)
3970010 (1969 big truck & industrial, usually steel crank)

The original heads for these engines were casting #'s
3917292 (64cc hi perf)
3947040 (64 cc truck, but good for hi perf)
3911032 (70 cc)
3927185 (70 cc)
3927188 (74 cc)
3917293 (75cc)

Be aware that most 327 heads don't have bolt holes in the front for accessories to bolt-on.

You could also make a 327 by using a 1969-1973 307 crankshaft with 327 pistons & rods in a 350 block. However all 307 cranks are cast.

i have a '69 small journal 327 and they are a little harder to find parts for but they still share alot whith the 350. Small journals are better for high rev power (i have a mechanical rev limiter on mine and it will run at 8K rpm and not hurt anything).
