my little 79 has been givin me some trouble. i had to buy a fuel pump from autozone but i am not sure if it is big enough. i finally figured out that my problem with the truck running for a short time and then dying was a fuel delivery problem and not and electrical problem. i looked into the carb bowl sight glass and watched it run out of gas and die. then i watched the pump fill the bowl up again. does anyone know how many gallons per hour the stock pump put out and if a replacement from the zone will work? if not then can i use a larger aftermarket one from the jeggs catalog without having an over fuel pressure problem with such a small return line? thanks

This happened to me with my 76 luv a few years back. I put on about 3 different electric pumps from Auto Zone before I found out the problem. In my case, it was a part in the carbeurator. I don't know the technical wording in this, but on the part where the gas comes in, there is a part with a little pin inside it that would get trash in it sometimes. You take it out, blow it out, and replace it and it runs just fine.

I had 2 different inline fuel filters on my lines, and the trash would still slip past it. I'm talking to the guy who helped me discover the problem with it tomorrow morning. I'll post the "technical" name of what you're looking for then. Hope this helps.

lol... is that what that thing is called??? Poor brain, why don't you work anymore?

I think the trash that was getting into mine came from the lines. The truck sat for several years before I started to drive it. (I inherited it) So the rubber was probably falling to pieces on the inside.

Glad I was able to help. Let me know if it fixes your problem.

Hey Grimmace, I just noticed where you're from. About 90 miles away from you in Holdenville, OK, there's a God-Awful purple Luv. I'm allowed to say it's God-Awful because it used to be mine. It belongs to my grandfather now. I gave it to him when I turned 18. If you're ever out that way, you should check it out. I think he lives on Broadway St.

It sounded like a good idea to paint it purple at the time. Unfortunately, that was also when "Barney" was at it's peak popularity. :2gunfire: Stupid Dinosaur.

Lol I forgot why I posted other than someone talking about purple trucks !!! Anyway I bought a electric fuel pump from Schucks here I'll find out which one it was and get back to you. It pumps enough to feed my hungry little weber on mine. So as soon as I find out which one it is that I bought I'll let you know cause it should be able to handle yours with no problem with being stcok. Talk at ya later.

lol... My purple was a deep metallic dark purple. Not quite as flamboyant as Husker's, but pretty loud to say the least. I guess my problem was the purple was soooo dark, and the trim was black. Kind of like wearing navy blue pants with a black shirt.

Once my grandfather passes on, I am supposed to inherit the truck back (again). I look forward to making the truck look like a winner, but I hope that day is far off in the future. For now, grandpa likes his purple mini, and I hope he enjoys it for years to come.

Right now I still have a fuel pump for the stock motor from autozone on mine and i have a 350 in it but i haven't gottin to drive it very far (something always goin out). Just wondering if it will be able to keep up ? Has an eldelbrock 600 on it right now and it hasn't had any problems at idle (idled for about an hour once before i shut it off)

i must just have a pump thats as messed up as a football bat. it cant keep up with its self :x oh well i will make it work even if i have to get the engine driven pump off of one of the planes i work on. it takes 50 psi from the boost pump and turns it into 1500 psi  i will win

I fixed it! it was expensive. i told everyone i replaced the fuel lines, dropped and cleaned out the tank and pre-filter, replaced the in-line fuel filter, installed a new aftermarket fuel pump relay, and re-built the carb.(all of these things went wrong at the same time! i checked everyone of them individually before i replaced them). well i thought i had a bad pump from autozone so i bought a direct replacement pump and installed it. no good. then i bought a new carb. ($215.00 :( ) and it still didnt work right. i got into my maintenance manual (the original series 9 manual) and checked everthing again. i figured out it was a fuel problem for sure so i started the truck and watched the carb. sure enough it would run just fine but you could look in the sight glass on the carb and watch it run out of gas! what in the world could be wrong? well i diddled with the wiring on the external resistor mounted to the coil. it is a step down resistor for the fuel pump i guess since it goes from the hot side of the coil to the fuel pump relay. i got back into my manual and looked at the wiring diagram for the fuel pump relay. the book has it wired in the running position. i had my relay wired in the off position. when i would turn on the key, i could hear the fuel pump running. you are not supposed to. i swapped the black/yellow stripe wire with the black/white stripe wire and voila. a three hundred dollar fubar for a freakin five dollar relay. sorry for the long post but i wanted to clear up a few things like DONT SUCK LIKE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! later all
