Looky what showed up in my driveway...
I saw it parked a block from my place and mentioned it to the wife, and to my shock and amazement she said "Let's go look at it!"
Its an 86 Isuzu trooper with Power Steering, 5 speed trans with integral t-case, and a 2.3L carbureted 4cyl.
So far I'm out just tune up parts and it drives, but it has a carb problem soon to be rectified with a little Weber luvin. (Unless someone knows how to cure an apparently common 2.3L carb prob, fluctuating idle and surges) I'm also going to need to be putting a heater core in it before the end of summer and some various little bits (door handle trim, heater control arm, etc) but other than that its a pretty solid find. Expect to see some info on what will go in a LUV off of it soon, but I'm probably not going to be doing any swaps for quite a while. The wife is really happy to have something to haul groceries inside out of the rain and wind.
From the looks of things, the 2.3L would not be a hard swap, all the mounts appear to be in the same places, etc. If you drop the carb and go weber it would be even easier, the carb has a lot of wiring to it. The ignition is really different, but not too complex to pull over I think. I have not been under it long enough to tell on the 5spd 4x4 trans, but it looks really similar. Steering looks pretty close, but perhaps an earlier year trooper might be more likely to match. I've got some steering parts out of a LUV I'll probably be able to look at this weekend so I should know more then.
