Decided to open up a thread on this build. I am taking my '72 and putting in air conditioning as well as doing restoration type stuff.

I got a Sanden 508 AC compressor for my birthday, here's a pic of it installed and belted. I haven't thrown the belt yet so it should be fine.

Image

I used the stock smog pump bracket to mount it. I bent it and cut off a little rise it had on it; basically a lot of trial and error fitting. Ended up having to remove the bracket from the engine to drill the holes out to accept a 3/8" diameter bolt. This compressor is the small 508, but for a small pickup cab it should be perfect.

Cool project.

What will the controls look like inside the cab? Any integration with the stock stuff?

I am planning to use the following unit from Vintage Air, and delete the stock heater core and controls as well as the shelf. If I take out those things I should have room for this unit. It has heat, cool, and defrost with the heater hoses coming in around the center of the cab, where they already do on my 72.

Very cool.

Send more pics when it's installed.

Update,

I got a new windshield for it, from Safelite Auto Glass. They also had a rubber gasket for it. So fear not, your local glass shop can get you a windshield and gasket.

Progress and pics will be slow the next few months. I am in the process of writing my thesis and my defense is on Jan 21, (have to turn it in Jan 4th) so I shouldn't do any truck work until after I finish. But I have all kinds of stuff lined up to do and a pile of parts in the garage, and I asked for a bunch of stuff for Christmas too.

Update, finally.

I swapped on my aluminum Offenhauser dual plane intake that I got from somebody on the forum here. Removed the stock one, discovered there's not much more meat on there if I ever wanted to port the heads, they're gasket matched pretty well.

Image

Also, the stock intake has a lot of metal that can be removed for gasket matching. The ports are so open I think if you gasket matched and maybe polished the inside, you could use it for racing.

Image

Here's what the ports look like on the Offy. Dual plane, primaries use the small side and secondaries the big side. Gives more airflow velocity for the same volume for better distribution. Best for improving part throttle, cruise, and idle which is what I need especially for when the AC is working.

Image

So, here it is swapped on there. I had previously sandblasted it and painted it with high temperature clear paint. Hopefully it will stay clean that way. Swapped on easy enough, there was a little bit of work with a file on a couple of the hold down washers and I couldn't use all the washers and lockwashers where it bolts to the exhaust manifold but all in all that part went easy.

Image

The hard part was bolting the damn carb on. First I discovered that the stock studs were metric and the Offy was tapped English. Went and bought English bolts. Then discovered that the threads needed to be chased with a tap. Went and bought a tap set because I didn't have one yet. Then discovered there was a reason there were studs in the first place, namely that bolts won't fit because of the way the carb is. Went and bought studs. Discovered that the studs were too long, had to cut two of them down. Note, Grade 5 studs dulled my hacksaw blade pretty quick. Finished with a file. Finally got the carb bolted on. Here's how it sits now.

Image

I broke the plastic ball and socket on the throttle linkage in the process. I can't find where to get a new one or equivalent; the ones I've found are all too big. I was able to make something that will work out of a piece of hardware that holds window screens in. Don't ask.

All in all though, it runs great. Perhaps after breaking, fixing, and readjusting the throttle linkage I now get all the way to W.O.T.; nevertheless, part throttle feels more responsive, and it idles better too. Using the vacuum gauge for tuning, I ended up putting in 20 degrees of initial timing. Found today that's too much, I've backed off to 15 degrees (spec is 12).

Hope to have the updates coming more frequently, especially since it's getting hot and I really wish I had air conditioning right now.

Alright, it's been f'ing forever since I updated this thing. I don't have any pics together yet, but as of now here is all that is done to the LUV. This includes some things I already talked about and showed pictures of in this thread. I'll work on getting specific pics in as time and interest warrant.

Weber 32/36 carb conversion -- New!
Offy dual plane intake
replaced fuse box with blade type universal unit -- New!
general electrical upgrades (fusible links, new wiring)
mounted vintage air evaporator under the dash -- New!
eDead 45 sound deadening under floor mat
redid drivers' door weatherstrip
new windshield
3.73 rear axle gears
painted stock rims rally silver
new tonneau cover
pertronix ignitor ignition
sliding rear window
broke my drivers' window crank.
fixed some oil leaks.

Will try to be better about this build ... various things have slowed it down but so help me I'll finish this thing some day.

The early (72-75) engines had the intake and exhaust on the same side.

Lookin' good. I love the valve covers on those early motors.

I don't remember exactly how I found that one, but it's just whatever they had for under-dash with heat, cool, and defrost. You can get them for cool only, but I took out the stock heater core and I need defrost.

I'm just barely getting the wiring for it done. I get the truck out and drive it once in a while, am always pleased with how it runs, plan on keeping it and just slowly getting stuff done. Emphasize 'slowly.' But like they say, don't laugh, it's paid for.

Is it just me or have the pictures gone away from this thread? I was hoping to see your progress but only broken image links... :(
