Having a vin stamped on the cab that does not match the pop rivioted vin on the door will is ileagle. The only way for this to be legal is if the CHP inspects the truck and puts a new VIN tag on, that will combine the two. They will do that only after they check to see if the non matching VIN is stolen. I have my facts straight, I used to do that for a few years. Do not challenge me on the California Vehicle code, you will lose as I have had months of training in it. Check California Vehicle Cod 10803, that should open your eyes. You fall in California code 10803 (b), if I found this in my working days I would impound the car for 30 days, request the DA to prosecute under the law and sub division i wrote out above. If I was to find the later VIN on the frame I would also write up false VIN ID to circumvent smog laws and throw that out there too. I did change my cab to a 1978 model, I took both titles to DMV, told them what I was doing, went to CHP and in less then a day I had my 74 frame with a 78 cab branded as a 74, the rest of the parts were legal junk and taken to a scrap yard, that easy.

10803. (a) Any person who buys with the intent to resell, disposes
of, sells, or transfers, more than one motor vehicle or parts from
more than one motor vehicle, with the knowledge that the vehicle
identification numbers of the motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts
have been altered, counterfeited, defaced, destroyed, disguised,
falsified, forged, obliterated, or removed for the purpose of
misrepresenting the identity or preventing the identification of the
motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts, is guilty of a public offense
and, upon conviction, shall be punished by imprisonment pursuant to
subdivision (h) of Section 1170 of the Penal Code for two, four, or
six years, or by a fine of not more than sixty thousand dollars
($60,000), or by both the fine and imprisonment, or by up to one year
in the county jail, or by a fine of not more than one thousand
dollars ($1,000), or by both the fine and imprisonment.
(b) Any person who possesses, for the purpose of sale, transfer,
import, or export, more than one motor vehicle or parts from more
than one motor vehicle, with the knowledge that the vehicle
identification numbers of the motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts
have been altered, counterfeited, defaced, destroyed, disguised,
falsified, forged, obliterated, or removed for the purpose of
misrepresenting the identity or preventing the identification of the
motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts, is guilty of a public offense
and, upon conviction, shall be punished by imprisonment pursuant to
subdivision (h) of Section 1170 of the Penal Code for 16 months, or
two or three years, or by a fine of not more than thirty thousand
dollars ($30,000), or by both the fine and imprisonment, or by
imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding one year or by a fine
of not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) or by both the fine
and imprisonment.

Maybe someone previously had a 2wd 72 luv with a rusty body and bought a not running 4wd 78 and put the body on the 2wd chassis. Maybe they sold it and someone bought it and kept up the registration/license and then sold it and forgot to explain this to the new owner.

Does that make them a criminal worthy of this spanish inquisition LUVRV8? Not everyone follows your little dot point DMV rules but that doesn't make them bad people or criminals.

Are you trying to call someone a thief or are you just being a nosey know it all? Quick better call the police.

Makes no difference WHY it was done. If it is altered, it is illegal, period...

Look, the truck has non matching numbers, I pointed out that it's not legal. So, now that he knows, yes he can be punished by the law. If he wants to sell it and the new owners finds out he has left himself open to criminal and civil legal issues. I still have many friends on the force, now I have the VIN number I could call them, trust me he does not want them knocking on his door if I did. I won't though, I was just pointing out he is about to commit a crime, I am certain he will sink his own ship.

All of this harrassment might be better done by PM rather than on a public forum.

There really is no such thing as an ex-police officer.

Back on topic:

Good luck either way mate, that thing looks killer. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to buy another donor and transfer all of your junk onto it then cut the stamped panels and sections off chassis so you can sell the rest for rust repairs. It's a shame about all the forum heroes throwing big nasty threats around but don't let it get you down.

Not harassment, he asked about VIN numbers and all questions we answered. I don't see where anyone posted a threat to him.

What are you, the Lorax?

No such thing as a ex-police officer, don't know where you get that from as I can prove that wrong.
