Hey guys, im new to these little trucks. I built a few s10s but never really took on a resto/older vehicle until now. Right now my plans are foggy just want to get it running again and enjoy it then decide where to go with it. Either way it will end up low with a more modern powerful engine.

Its a 1977 with (he says) 64,000 miles pretty much all original truck. The previous owner (im assuming) created a short possibly installing the new alternator and fried a wire in the harness and also melted part of the fuse block... An thats kind of where im at trying to fix the harness and fuse block .. I pulled the steering column to make some room and im gonna disconnect under the dash and pull it throught the firwall to repair... Im also trying to find a fuse block or considering using an aftermarket one any advice?

Heres some pics of the truck and the wires...

Heres is how i figured out what wire goes where lol

Heres the wires and fuse block

Note the one wire below that is completely missing its covering, it is melted all the way into under the dash.

It ran and drove before i got it home and started messing with the fuses but it would only run for like 10 seconds then shut off.. but would start right back up run for the same amount of time and die.. Seemed like it lost fuel and died.... so not sure whats going on there but after i messed with the wires it will no longer start nor will the dash lights come on like it did before.. So im gonna try and make everything right again and see if it will stay running.. Lots of headache in store for me lol

Nice looking truck man. What are you thinking for the new drive train?

Do this first. Most electrical issues can be fixed with this repair.

http://www.luvtruck.com/pdf/Fuse_Box_Repair.pdf

The running then stalling sounds like the fuel pump is only running while cranking. The fuel pump needs the charging system working to run while the engine is running. I bet for a test if you run power to it it would stay running.

Well originally wanted to go v8 but header clearance seems to be a major issue with these frames and doing serious chassis work isnt possible right now cause o do t have the space or welding equipment so im kind of leaning on a sr20det swap or maybe even an inline 6 if i have the room but like i said i have some resto work to do first and im building a steel frame Kawasaki stunt bike at the same time so funds are going to bike first.

Hmm thanks, my chraging system should of been working but i guess not obviously some wires are missing/ not hooked up. When i get the harness and fuse block fixed ill attempt to hit wire the pump to keep it running. But my fuse block is done for if u look closer in the pic its melted and dont trust reusing it.

I am going to a truck scrap yard tomorrow morning.. $100 and i get a not melted fuse block and whatever i want off the harness so im gonna try and take as much of the harness as possible plus any extra relays under the hood.

One is the fuel pump relay and the other is the coil resistor by pass relay. You have the link to the factory wiring diagram, they are listed and shown there.

On the main Paige Ben and the rest of the Mod's were nice enough to scan and put on the wiring diagrams.

That sounds like about $60-70 too much, am I wrong? Even in L.A., where junkyard prices are pretty...inflated, I'd be suspicious someone asking 100 bucks for old wires and plastic. Is that a typical price for an old wiring harness?

For 100 bucks, you oughtta walk away with every other trim piece or interior bit you need. Door panel trim, window cranks, window spray nozzles, etc.

When I re did my LUV I pulled the complete dash harness, engine bay harness and the harness the goes from the firewall to the bed/fuel pump in a hour and didn't have to cut a single wire.

Basically I pulled the gauge cluster out, was able to work through that hole and disconnect all connections, pulled it out through the fire wall.

Is the donor truck the same year? If the gauges are both alike, like donor and your truck have the oval gauges or both have the round gauges then the interior harness will work. If they are different the interior harness will not work.

I did the same.. but i had to pull ash tray out and i dropped the heating/air controller down..

Will it work if i swap gauge clusters? Im am unsure if they are the same or not.. either way the harness needed pulled out cause if i cant swap it will need repaired... Its completely out now. If the gauges are different it wont work at all?
