that is one of the issues that will need to be addressed. along with the way the manifold is routed, it comes in contact with the torsion bars. Plus the factory motor mounting plates will need to be moved. still lots of work ahead of me.

coilover front conversion maybe, clear space the torsion bars are taking up and get some handling performance to go with the motor

its been done so there must be a practical way to fit the shift lever.. maybe a bit of cutting and welding to angle the shifter forward?
either way i cant wait to see this thing done! makes me wish i was workin on my luv

Grabbed my cut off wheel today and worked on the truck for a wile. (no pic sorry, pics of the aftermath to follow). got one of the motor mounting plates removed and the ebrake pulley system lever removed. Was having some issues with my compressor so decided to open it up and see what was going on. From 165psi down to 60psi with about 1min of all out cutting. compressor was unable to keep up( 25gal two-stage oil-less craftsmen). Would have to let it compress for 15-20 min to get back up to 165psi. So once I got the Comp motor open, the reason for it taking so long was becoming more clear. The Previous owner had sprayed lacquer paint in close proximity to the Comp and gummed all the flapper valves, (not sure if that's what there called) thus making compression very difficult. So I cleaned it as best I could and reassembled it. by the time I was done with the Comp it was to late to do any more on the truck. I will try and give it another go tomorrow.

Did a little looking around and it seems like to me that those shifters are for auto transmissions. Correct me if I'm wrong. Unsure how you would get on of those to work with a manual transmission.

You're right. The slapshift is just a ratcheting shifter for automatics. You "slap" it into the next gear and it won't go into the next gear until you let off and "slap" it again.

Just a few photos. atm not a whole lot of motivation to work on the truck. Just seem like this thing is fighting me every step of the way, one step forward, two steps back. (sigh). well either way, here are a few photos for your viewing pleasure.

Motor mount brackets removed

Image

Transmission crossmember is out as well. I will be redoing the crossmember to be removable.

Image

pulled bench seat and carpet, shopvacked the dirt and whatnot (before and after photos) so as to see where I'm going to need to cut the tunnel to fit. Not going to cut the entire tunnel out, just section the back half of it, where the transmission was coming in contact with the tunnel.

turns out the shifter will not be as far back as originally anticipated. The forth picture is marked where the end of the transmission comes to.

Made a little progress. had to remove more of the transmission tunnel because the I am still unable to get the transmission and motor level with the ground. Also I am going to have to go with coil over front suspension and a rack and pinion steering setup. The idler arm comes in contact with the turbo waste-gate actuator hence the need for the rack and pinion. and motor mounts are right where the torsion bars are, so those are definitely going to have to go as well.

Traction in the rain? whats that, I've never heard of such a thing. ;)
I'm not as far along on the project as I would like to be, but I guess that's just how things go sometimes.

That "gallows" frame will work great! Here is a pic of my frame being used and it worked well. Make sure to use cardboard and rags to put between the load pressure points before lifting. Since I was by myself, I used the engine hoist to steady the front - lifting and lowering as I adjusted the chain hoist. Then I took it all apart and stored it in the garage.
