finally found the noise I have been looking for. It was in the gear . Did my annual axle inspection and the gear oil was really dark . Brake pads were also ready to be changed . Axle spline look good .But this leads me to ask at what power level and weight should I be making a move to 35 spline ? Gear had like .052 back lash in it . and I think it is done .

And I serviced my pit bike .

So im pricing new 35 splines and a pro gear also . When is a pro gear required ? Strange says they are only good for 300 passes , which has me worried . I am pulling the housing out to pressure wash it and have it put in a narrowing jig to make sure it is straight . Im also going to have a back brace installed .

A pro gear is a softer rockwell, so the teeth can sorta bend, rather than break. This softness means the teeth will wear quicker. IMO, if the standard gears are holding up for a while, and you are not seeing twist in the splines of the current axles, I wouldn't upgrade. The 35 spline stuff usually requires a different pig, unless you have the big bearings already. I bought 35 spline axles for my 67 malibu pro touring car I am building and I know first hand how pricy it all is...

Well I do have a strange 3.250 bearing aluminum case . I also have the 5/8" drive lugs and a 35 spline spool . So I would need axles and a gear with a full bearing set . All my old parts could be put into another axle I have and set up as a S-10 / luv rear axle and sold to offset the cost of this build .

Ah, I get it. Glad I am not pushing the Horsepower you are. My gears will probably last me forever ;)

Got a few things done a bit farther. Axle is finished . I had a drain plug added. The pilot holes in the spring perches were not the correct size to keep the axle square and were not deep enough . They were 1/2 pilot bolts , so I added a pair of 1/2id x 9/16 od bushings between the housing and the spring to keep everything straight . My strange aluminum case turned out tio be 3.060 bearing and I had already ordered 35 spline axles ( they will be here tueday) . I had to break down and buy a new case . Really feel like I should have gone aluminum due to weight , but I ended up with the steel one . I am into this project for over $2000 . Also got free shipping and 30% off at Aerospace for the brake pads .
Axle back brace and straighten -$300
Gear , bearings & case -$1050
axles bearing and studs -$525
Brake pads and parts -$119
Anyway here is current pile of parts .

Good reading & learning. I just read the whole thread you have a nice truck with tons of work in it. I used to race my Luv in Baytown years ago when I live there before it got wrecked. I really like HRP . I started out at Houston International & had lots of fun at that place in my younger years. I kind of got away from the cars & started racing my old Vmax . I ran it a lot at Baytown before I moved. I am happy to have another Luv truck now & am looking forward to getting it running. It will be just a street truck though. I raced my bike for a while in Florida now I live in TN & have not been to a track since I moved here. I might have to fix that soon.

Lost in the finals Satruday and alternator locked up @4 cars sunday . Pretty decent first outing . Moving to a low mount on the driverside to shorten the belt .

I had to make my brackets and use a mini alternator on mine. Not as much room as it looks...

I figured as much . I have a CS130 set up on it now which is smaller . Measuring thinks it looks great but I bet it fills up quick down there.

Does using the alternator affect your et? I have one on mine but I was going to disable it while making a pass.

I charge between rounds , but after starting the motor a few times in the lanes and dual fans and electric water pump it seems to keep the MSD box happier . I believe it makes it more consistant. Im planning on putting one in again with a way shorter belt .
