Ok. There are so many 350s everywhere. And their so cheap. Should I just attempt that job or is that just too much work for a beginner?

look around the site there are plenty of people who have done the swap. i was thinking about it the other day.. or a 283 something small block chevy. since parts motors are a dime a dozen for any of them..
you can buy the mounts to swap in the engine so it really comes down to how much time you want to spend on it. there are loads of people who can give you advice and answers to any question you have. if you can find a deal on a 350 (which is impossible not to) i would go for it.

Good start, engine could also be a 307 all of witch will work quite well for your truck.

When i first built my truck i used a built 283/4spd. setup and the stock rear and it was a blast to drive.

So I may not need a new rear end? That would be do nice. I think I'm going to have to rebuild this motor. I know there's kits for that but is that the cheapest/best way to go?

if you keep it fairly close to stock and dont drive it like its on a 1/4 mile strip the stock rear end will last you a while. but if you really want to call down the thunder i would upgrade at some point.

check out summit they sell rebuid kits of all types for small block chevys.. for whatever purpose the motor is being built. or you can pick up a full gasket set and some new bearings if the internals are savable.
