Hey Guys,

I am starting to do some research on restoring my first vehicle, a 79 Luv long bed. I have owned the truck since 1998.

My plans for the truck are to do a frame up restoration. I want to do a V8 Swap and also make it a short bed. i guess my first question is what frame/suspension modifications will i need to do to achieve this and where can I find a short bed in good shape? I live 45 minutes north of Philadelphia, PA.

I already have a rebuilt 350 ready to go for this build. What drive line components are necessary? i.e. transmission, rear...

the frame itself can handle a standard 350 all day long without any kind of problems, very strong, full boxed

hit the ol "search" button and look around the site dozens of people have done the swap recently and can help you with specific info you may need.
i have not done it personally but as far as i understand a 350, with Th350 auto trans, and which ever rear end does pretty good.
stock rear end is able to hold up to a 350 just fine (unless your running race slicks are a heavily modded engine) a lot of people have swapped out the rear end for a camaro or S10 rear, ford 9", DANA whichever to go with their sbc, pretty good list of options since the luv frame is so strong,

as for suspension you could crank the torsion bars in the front end to handle the weight of he engine better, or you could swap in some coilover springs to the front end for a better ride.

I am pretty sure that a longbed frame is specific for a longbed box. A shortbed will not line up at all on a longbed frame. You would have to use a shortbed frame.

i was thinking that but wasnt sure,, pretty sure the wheel base was extended for the longbed a short bed wouldnt fit properly, maybe shorten your bed a bit?

Thanks, I will make a post for a bed in the classifieds.

I am going to end up taking a section of the frame out to make it a short bed frame unless I can fine another truck to piecemeal!

Are there any good sites to find new parts? I looks at some of the links on here but I didn't have much luck with body parts. I remember JC Whitney used to have body parts for these things 10 years ago...

Nice Truck!

My buddy has a 383 in his K5... its ridiculous.

My biggest challenge right now is getting a new bed and shortening the frame. The bed is pretty rusted and beat up.

I am planning to go with a manual trans. What are some low budget manual trans options (Camaro, S10, C3500)

anything that bolted up to a small block or 4.3 v6 really.... t5 5 speed... t56 6 speed (camaro/vette) etc etc

not to be a dick but i agree with wicked... i have nearly 0 experience with small blocks since the luv is my first truck but i can all but walk you thru the entire process. it just takes the time browsing forums and going over the important info and there is plenty of it out there seeing that the smallblock chevy is arguably the most popular and supported engine on the planet..

My 2 cents

Ok guys ease up for a moment. First off everyone on here came to this site to gain info of some sort. Some of us have more some have less. Some guys here have more knowledge of one type less of other. I build 200mph bikes and nitrous junkies and yet know little about the intimacies of the secret black art of Luv ownership. Be patient, be helpful, and mentor the new guys.

Stock rear end will work for 400 plus horsepower. They take alot. Weak link will be small luv universal compared to heavy duty turbo 350 joint. 4:10 or 4:56 factory luv. Seen them run low 7s 1/8th mile for years and hold up with slicks. Think the spiders were welded.
