i know the manual for the luv is only like $25 bucks
thats about the last thing left for me on my list of things to do, new head, new block, new rods, used crank but was in good shape, new everything. just never set the valves.... dont know how to either. i know my dad does..
if your still working on it when i do mine i will do a thread on it so you can see what to do and get the setting specs.

I have been around these trucks since 1979. I am a ASE master mechanic for autos and trucks. I have a V-8 in my truck and I still refer to my manual often. You really need one.

this is a basic gist of the procedure, but yeah get a service manual. it is indeed VERY worth it.

look at the arm that comes off the camshaft ( with the one flat side that rubs against the cam)

on the other end of the arm, there is a nut and stud that leaves a small gap between the valve stem and the end of that stud.

The clearance on those valves are adjusted by loosening the nut and closing the gap between the stud and the valve stem.

first things first, you will need three or four things.

Wrench (12 mm i think)
screwdriver
socket and ratchet (to rotate the cam)
Feeler gauge.

First of all, unplug the battery, or the ignition coil lead wire so you don't fire up the engine with the valve train disturbed

ok, do one side at a time. i prefer to do the exhaust first.
Start with the number 1 cylinder. (closest to the radiator) rotate the cam until the lobe of that valve faces straight down

loosen the nut and use a feeler gauge between the stud and the valve stem and close the gap until you feel a SLIGHT drag on the feeler gauge. once you get to that point, back off the stud JUST A LITTLE BIT so that when you tighten the nut, it will be DEAD ON once you finish tightening it. If you can feel a slight drag on the feeler gauge when you slide it in between the stem and the stud, then it's good.

The clearance on the exhaust side should be 0.10"
the clearance on the intake side should be 0.06"

do all the valves in this manner, but keep in mind to do ONE side at a time so you don't mix up the clearances and get the ticking noise after wards.

again, make sure all the cab lobes face DOWN when you adjust the clearances.

Replace the valve cover gasket when you're done.

if i missed anything, someone chime in

Well i ordered everything for my truck off northernautoparts.com

And as for 4x4 parts you can find some nice stuff that has been fabed up at this web site.

http://diy4x.com/

The parts you order here will be very strong/cheap, most of it is for full size chevy but you can make it work on the luv,As for the front you really cant lift it to to much.

All i am going to do with this luv now is lift the front 2 inch's get longer shackle's. Then run some 30/9.50/r15 pro comp mud tire's.

Going to go big and invest in a 1980 chevy k5 blazer 8 inch lift 1 ton axle's,locker's front and rear, 383 stroker engine,400 tran's,205 t case, 38" tsl/bogger's.

It looks like you'll have it on the road before Spring. Keep up with the progress and good luck.
