The Quadra Jet has been my carb of choice and I have never had issues with one. With the slight build on your 4.3 it might handle a Q-Jet? For drivability you cant beat them.

The edelbrock 500 is a little much on my 4.3 yours has some work done to it so im sure it would handle it fine. mine handles it well enough im not changing it. you should be fine with either

i am getting a edelbrock 500. list #1404
its odd it bolts onto a square bore flange and is sold as a square bore but it is a spread bore layout with bigger secondaries. which should work great for economy and power and is what edelbrock recommends be used with this intake

Did you order the jet kit? If not you will need one. The selection of jets and mixture rods are needed to tune it correctly.

thats gonna be a local pickup item when i get the carb and see where im at with the current setup
the dude down the street told me he is willing to help me get it dialed in. and once thats all done with when i have a few bucks i will be taking it to a shop in portland for a dyno run and see where im at from there as far as tuning and hp/tq go

Local pick up? Do you have a parts store that has the kit or are you buying 1 piece at a time. Here is what I am talking about.

http://www.summitracing.com/search/prod ... umber/1404

If you buy the kit the instructions give you step by step instructions that you can do yourself in a couple plug chop runs. You wouldn't have to pay anyone to do it and you will be money ahead. It's more then just changing jets, it has different metering rods and springs. I also see from the link above there is a CD for tuning tips. It looks like it might be 3 bucks well spent.

You don't need a 02 sensor to tune. The old fashion plug chop will do just fine, the plugs will tell you all you need to know.

carb will be here tomorrow. i asked the seller about the jetting and right now it is setup in stock condiguration and he is including a couple pairs of leaner jets and needles in case i need them. gonna start off with it as is and will see how it runs.
hopefully i can drive it around more reliably in a day or two

it is finally drivable! that carb out of the box was close enough to drive me home. it is a little rich so i definitely need to put those leaner needles in and see how it goes from there doing that today. but as is i was able to drive the ten or so miles home without incident. it doesnt like going above about half throttle it gets a bit hesitant and just a tiny bit jumpy
going to adjust my timing as well because it doesnt like to shut off when i key it off it turns over real rough for a few seconds.
will try to get a video later.

not out of the woods yet but seems to only be a few bushes left in the way

Adjustedmy timing from the books recommended 0* to 4* and it smoothed out a little, adjusted my idle per the edelbrock instructions.
i need to get some of those heat shielding boots for my spark plugs my #5 is basically in contact with a header tube and was arcing over i put a little piece if bent metal between them to maintain an air gap but im pretty sure it is arcing to the piece now anyway.
and one of my oil filter adapter o rings is bad and leaking a decent amount of oil so i went to the gm dealership and got a new set of four ordered will replace those monday when i do my first oil change. driving with a jug of oil and checking it every time i stop. my oil pressure is still good so im not terribly worried about it for now
electric fan is doing its job but i really wish my temp gauge worked! i need to figure out why neither the temp or gas gauges work.
but its comin along. havent been able to really open it up cuz of the untuned carb and possible half dead cylinder but it definitely pulls pretty good :ebiggrin first gear only gets me about ten feet tho. that 4.10 rear has to go! 55 on the freeway (gps speedo) is at 2600rpm

You are almost there!

When I got my truck it had the 4.56 with the SBC and I was hitting 3k at 45mph. It was not really driveable like that, other than a trip to 7-11. You will have to change it out but you can buy some gear ratio if you run a real tall tire. I used some SUV tires that were 235.75.15 and with the 3.42 carrier it was Ok. I am in heaven with the 3.0 I have now.

yeah im gonna need to change it out asap
i would like a exploder 8.8 but that limits me to a 3.54 until i change to aftermarket gears. 3.23 would be pretty nicr along with another inch of rear tire... a 6 speed would be real nice...

getting real close now

getting the truck to a carb shop on Thursday, picked up a edelbrock calibration kit today it needs it so I'm looking forward to driving it when its done there. expecting to spend $90-180 on tuning for it. totally worth it
put those hei boot shields on and so far so good. my buddy said he may have a set of ceramic boot wires I can have so thst would help the heat issue.

I picked up a 180* tstat yesterday
and my buddy hooked me up with a new set of accel ceramic boot plug wires so I can be sure I won't melt another boot
as it is my truck is running really lean it likes to pop when coming from a stop and last night when I got home I popped my hood and my collectors were glowing a bit so its parked until tuned.

didn't get to the tuner today -.- battery terminals were dirty and wouldn't let the truck start so I wasted thst time getting my multimeter only to find out the battery was fine just wasn't conducting to the wires amd needed to be cleaned -.-
next open appt at the tuner isn't for another week so I'm gonna look around for another. in my down time I'm gonna swap out the stock needles for the next richer size and see if it helps any

Just much two cents. Make the appointment and work on it yourself. Keep a log of what you did down to the last detail in case you still have to take it to the tuner. Once upon a time they didn't know either...
