Stock 1.8L is around 85 horse power. There is alot of info out here in building engines if you use the search button. There is a sticky out here that has alot of info in it. It's called, "Fullaluv's Birth of an engine" and is on the stock truck homepage. I wasn't a member when that individual posted the thread and...well it was an interesting article to say the least. If you read it you will see what I mean. Anyway, it's a decent article and has some good info. There is alot more info out here as well. Ask if you get into any trouble.

I just rebuilt my Isuzu. Cost about 900. Got the kit from Parts train (450) and found that
1. The throw out bearing is pressed onto the clutch fork. Had to take it to a machine shop.
2. The piston ring thingy (Forgot the name) but holds the piston head to the shaft, was also pressed on.

After putting the engine back in I changed from the Hitachi carburetor to a Weber, HUGE difference.

Good luck. Make sure you post pics. :D

You talkin' about the pin that holds the piston to the rod? If so, that's a wrist pin.

Yep, took the head to the shop (135.00 ish) and I honed the cylinders. And, yes in my last post I was talking about the wrist pins.

Wow this sucks so bad my trucks motor is knocking bad and smoking white smoke like crazy!!! lmfao this sucks well i was excited/happy for a good 20 mins on the way home from the auto part store then i get home hook everything up and then i hear it knockin and smokin....so this limited budget just turned into a new project! ima pull the motor and rebuild it......so any info you guys got on rebuilding it plz leme know now!

On our 1977 LUV Mikado, the timing chain chewed into a water passage that is molded as part of the aluminum timing chain cover. The dealer we had the truck into in 1982 replaced the head (which had tested as good), head gasket and rings BUT did not fix this issue, thus $1,400 later we still had a water-in-the-oil problem (lots knocking, lurching, lots of white smoke!) until WE found the problem ourselves because we were too broke to let these "experts" continue.
I do not know what year your truck is, but if your timing chain was rattling at all, pull the timing chain cover and check if the integral water passage has been breached by the chain. It may not actually need a full rebuild, just a flush-out and a timing chain cover replacement (tighten the chain, too).
We've been doing most of our own work on our truck ever since, a dealer shop manual for the 77 LUV is worth its weight in gold. (We asked for and retained the parts that were swapped out, most of these are probably fine.)

Good Luck!
KP

CONGRATS on the baby!!

NAPA can get a rebuild kit. For the heck of it I looked on JC Whitney a while back and they have a complete rebuild kit as well. I've never used a kit from Whitneys but I guess it is an option. I think most parts stores can get what you need, it might take a little time but they can get them. Keep us posted.

It's amazing you are building an '80 4x4 Luv the same time my son is. His is on a budget as well and we just painted it Monday night. We shot it with Van Sickle paint that he bought from FLEET supply where he works. He's now putting the interior back together and getting ready to spray on a bed liner from Orielly's line of that product. I haven't found a original replacement fuel pump but there are some out there that will work. Good luck with your engine.
