It may have already been done but im fitting a starter from a 2.6 ? Isuzu to a early style 72-75 Luv Gasser.
Here is a pic off the high torque starter given to me believed to be from a 2.6

The mounting bolt holes were a little bit out so i reamed them out to 1/2'. The starter fits snugly into the plate sandwiched between the engine and gearbox. The mounting bolts line up well.

The teeth on the starter and flywheel mesh well.

I hooked up a battery to give it a spin, the starter engaged well and spun the engine over with ease and without no nasty noises. The only problem was the gear on the starter didnt want to disengage the flywheel unless i gave it a bump.
Going to take a look again during the day, its winter here in Oz and damn cold out in my workshop.

It does have a license plate so technically it is a street truck, that sets off car alarms and makes kids cry. lol

From the pics you took that starter is a perfect fit as the drive has the proper clearance to the flywheel as for the return i have had that problem with other starters before and just bumping the throttle a little will kick it out.I am not sure what causes it other then if my idle speed was a little higher it would not happen or the starter drive drags just a little and needs a little nudge to kick out.

Good pics and info thanks.
