Well i finally fired up the truck. t only ran it 10 minutes cause it started to heat up. I shut if off and cooled down and then went again for another 10. No noises but a little rattle from the solid cam and lifters. I set them with the inner spring off at .o20. Hope it is broke in enough so I can put the inners back on and set the gap to .016. I assume the solids will have a little rattle if I remember right.
Have a feeling I am going ot have to ge a different raddy and fan setup for this one. The fenders got so hot form the header you couldnt touch them. especially the one that wraps the frame on the passenger side.
It got to 220 and and I shut it down both times. So much for letting it run a solid 25 mins for the breakin on the cam or should I retry it after i put the inner springs in and set the lash

Hmmm thats a good question....we break in all of our motors with full springs ready to go at 3k for 25-30 mins..sounds like you might have a cooling problem

My other engine never did get tha hot. I went to a smaller but aluminum radiator. Might have to get a differeent fan. i just have the one 15 inch pusher.
Anyway at least it ran without any big problems.

I've seen headers glow a dim red during break in. Just make sure the engine doesn't overheat.

If your headers are a bright red, you might have a problem.

From what I've read, the break in doesn't have to be one continuous run. In other words, three 10 min runs are the same as one 30 min run.

Cool. Nope my headers didn't glow at all. i only let the engine get to 218 or 20 and shut it off. Never boiled over or anything comeout the overflow. I think the fenders were so hot is because i took out the inner panels and the hookers put out a lot of heat.
I have one big 15 inch pusher fan in front of the raddy. might have to go to a 2 12 inch set up that wil push more.

I,m glad you did not give up on your truck and sell it. Building a hot rod can be very frustrating, but now that you have it running you are going to have so much fun with it. I wanted to haul mine to the crusher on so many occasions, but when I'm going on a cruise it's just great enjoyment. That,s the way to stick with it. :)

Thanks a bunch. I just finished the last breakin 10 mins and have to put the inner springs back in and re adjust the valve lash. Sure sounds sweet with the cam and 3 inch exhaust. I have single chamber flowmasters on the back right past the axle. Loud at 2500 RPMs. Still might have to go a different fan route.
Now I can get down to business on getting all the wiring backin place and concentrate on the primer and paint. Hopefully I will have it on the road mid or late august in primer if all goes well.
