Are there any plans to increase the limits on the size of files you can download? With the newer cameras, you now have to somehow resize your photo to submit.
These current limits were probably sufficient years ago.

The photos I tried to download on this site (unsuccessfully) downloaded perfectly fine on pretty much all the other forum sites that I visit.

Needless to say I am using the other forums a lot more often.

You simply cannot "stand still" in this constantly evolving technical environment.

You're confusing "download" and "upload". But I agree, limits need to change if they were appropriate for 10 years ago. So I'm curious, what size are the photos that you can't UPload here?

I thought that, from my perspective, I was "downloading" my photos from my location to theirs.
I think a case could be made for both terms.
Your makes just a little more sense.

Thanks.

These definitions are pretty standard. The internet is often represented as a "cloud", ever since it was created. Nowadays, "cloud" has a slightly different meaning, in tech circles--but for this discussion, it doesn't make any difference. So, think of it as sending files from your computer or device, UP to the "cloud". If you want to get something from a website, you're pulling it DOWN, as if from the "cloud".

Once again, what size photos are too big?

Jack

Anything produced from a phone camera newer than a flip phone.

The LOWEST resolution my phone camera will take is still 4 times too big a file for this site to accept. I won't even get into the pictures my DSLR takes...

Not that it matters a lot (I don't carry any weight here), but I completely agree that it makes sense to increase the limits as technology evolves. I've done that several times on the forum that I administer. The price of storage has dropped over the years at about the same rate that photo sizes have increased.

On the other hand, there's a reasonable argument to NOT increase the size limits. It's simply that anything image above 2400 pixels wide (currently that would apply to some high-end displays only) has to be reduced (by the browser) to fit on a user's screen. For most users, their screen resolution is much lower. In other words, for the web, there's very little benefit to allowing images greater than around 1600 pixels wide. Yes, browsers will typically display the full size of larger images if you click them (a second time), but then you have to scroll up/down and left/right to see them. The main benefit is (as you've noted) that users would not be forced to resize their images.

So it's up to the site admins. The phpBB forum software has a "Maximum upload size" that can be changed. And although the web server's php settings also have an upload size limit, it can be changed as well, if the admins have control of that (perhaps they don't?).

This is one of those things that will be up to Ben. I could increase the limit, but the server doesn’t belong to me, so I’m not comfortable allocating more space to attachments than is already allowed.

He will see this the next time he’s around I’m sure.

I'm just glad it is being considered.
Thanks

The entitlement attitude of some people never ceases to amaze me.

Limits increased.

Were my comments indications of "entitlement"? I was merely offering a suggestion which, judging from the responses, reflected the opinions of at least a few.
And I did it in a very respectful manner.
It can only make your site even better.
Please explain where you sense any sense of entitlement.

I didn't read it as entitlement.

Maybe he was referring to me?
