I'm not a tranny expert, but my old trans had that problem in reverse gear. The syncros were worn. If that is the problem, then you will need a partial rebuild, or full rebuild, or another tranny.

make sure the shift lever is not hitting the floor boards, it might not be going all the way in gear

If you have any body lift that might be a contributing factor too. I had to cut quite a bit around my 4x4 shifter to get it to clear and stay in 4LO. Everytime I backed up it would pop out.

sounds like you need a t-case rebuild, shouldn't be too hard if you got a manual.

there should be a spring that holds the shifter in gear on the shifter. See if thats still there. Just pull the boot up and you should see it there on the boot thats on the transfer case.

Chavy, is sounds to me like the trans will need a repair. The syncros on 4th gear have worn out. As long as it is out you might as well rebuild the whole thing so you know it's all done and good.
