Ok, on my 81 4x4 my mechanic is suggesting moving the rear leaf springs to the topside of the rear end vs the bottom.

He is also suggesting getting a Toyota straight axel front end for the front.

We are taking the bed off and putting a flat bed stake body on it.

Anyway, he is saying these two mods will give me more ground clearance.

Anyone ever done these?

Yes, but not with a Toyota axle. Back before factory mini truck 4x4s hit the market in 1979 this was a popular mod, even available from dealers, which is where I got mine.

It's a Dana 30, probably from a Jeep, modified to use the stock LUV 6-bolt rotors & calipers. Every 4x4 conversion kit of the day used a similar axle, LUVs, Ford Couriers & Datsuns used 6-bolt fronts to match the stock rears, Toyota used large 5-bolt fronts & a small-to-large 5-bolt adapter in the rear. The stock 2wd trannies were used along with divorced Dana 20 or Dana 300 t-cases. Everything came in kit form along with instructions, or you could order the kit pre-installed through the various dealerships. These haven't been available for over 30 years.
The easiest swap now is a '79-'85 4x4 Toyota pickup/4Runner front axle- it's the right width & lug pattern & probably 4.10 ratio to let you retain the stock engine/tranny/rear axle.

Have never done it but this truck has an all Toyota suspension conversion.

Don't know much about it as this was back in the early 90's and I tried to buy the truck twice as it is one of the nicest LUV's I have ever seen.
ps didn't notice the OP is over a year old, oh well.
