Hi, I am rethinking my plans for my two 80 luvs one 4x2 and one 4x4.I bought a 2.2 diesel with the t5 5speed that I was planning to put in the 2wd but now that I bought the 4wd I was thinking the diesel would be cool in the 4wd. And a 350 in the 2wd.My question is,is there a 4x4 tranny that would bolt to t5's removable bell housing or would i have to find a tranny out of a diesel trooper?

A 4x4 tranny from a S-10 would be the best start, but make sure the t-case has a passenger side drop, & check that the input shaft matches the 2wd tranny, both in diameter & length & splines. Another option would be a divorced t-case behind the 2wd tranny. Also check that the 2wd oil pan will clear the front drive assembly.
Diesel 4x4 Isuzu pickups used 4sp trannies until '86, then they became 5sp as in Troopers. A 4sp tranny might allow the use of the stock crossmember, a 5sp definitely won't.

I really want to do this but my biggest problem is I'm young and learning so I don't know alot when it comes to knowing what trannys are around and what will work on my setup. So if you guys help me out on this I'd appreciate it.Such as is there certain years of s10s that would have the trannys that would bolt up to my bellhousing from the 2wd t5. I'm not scared to do fab work. From what I was reading I'd need to do a body lift to get clearace for the oil pan? I'd like to go with a 5speed for the diesels sake. But yeah, a diesel will be cool in a 4x4 get some low end torque that the gas lacks. Thanks for your help.

Body lift wouldnt gain clearance for oil pan it would bring the body higher over the engine. You could do a body lift then raise engine and trans higher for clearance but again idk if thats needed i dont have a diesel so no idea what they look like or where the oil pan may end up sitting. You may be able to modify the oil pan to clear the front axle and avoid all the extra lifting and tweaking of parts

If you decide not to do this, I think the diesel/T5 2wd combo would bring really good money. In fact, I've seen just the bell housings sell for $200-$300.

I am planning to keep the diesel I'm just debating whether I should put it in the 2wd or the 4wd. But I have some questions, would any older s10 4x4 tranny with any gas engine work?Or is there a certain year, engine or tranny that I would need to look for? Also since this diesel is out of a s10 would the isuzu 4x4 tranny bolt up to it?

I think oldestisuzuist answered most of that in an earlier post. As for the Isuzu transmission, it would have to be from a diesel, or at least have an Isuzu diesel bell housing. The S10 bell housing will not fit the Isuzu transmission.

Is your real name "love4theluv"? ;)

I use "JoeIsuzu" because that's the fictitious name of the shady character Isuzu used in their commercials to pitch their vehicles. Surely you've seen the Joe Isuzu commercials... :?:

Hopefully I'm not being to stupid here but the diesel engine and tranny are still in a 92 Isuzu pickup that I am driving so I don't know the length, diameter or spline count. So what I was wondering if any one would know exactly what I'd need to be looking for as I'd like to have my parts rounded up be fore I pull my only rides apart. Also never had any experience with a divorced t case what would I be looking at,or for if I went that route? Sorry for all my questions  I'm just learning so I like to have an idea what I'm getting into before I make pieces.

Basic principle is, you will need the transfer case drop in passenger side to match front diff axle location.
Match the 2.2L with 4WD MSG tranny is the easiest solution.

4WD owner usually love to have low gearing ratio, and as far as I know, most of 5-speed 4WD MSG in US had 3.785 1st gear ratio.
So I prefer to use T5 tranny with 4.03 1st Gear ratio and match it with transfer case from other vehicle.

If you want to install the Diesel engine into the 4x4 I can make this easy for you. I currently own a drive an 80 luv with diesel swap on veggie oil as fuel.
You are missing a lot of parts needed to complete your project. Having the engine is a good start, but what would make your project easier is to find a 81-82 Chevy Luv or 83-86 Isuzu Pup parts truck with 4x4 factory diesel drivetrain. Here is a list of things to consider before getting started on your project.
1. You would need the glow system to even start the Diesel engine.
2. The gasser fuel system on 80 luv needs to be changed over to run diesel.
3. Positive battery terminal cable needs to be longer because diesel starter on driver side.
4. 1980 Luv wiring needs to be cut open and have voltage regulator and it's circuits removed because diesel alternator recharges battery with a relay and not regulator.
5. Heater hoses on Diesel engine are cut and modified to fit the 1980 heater core .
6. Radiator has to be custom fit or custom made because diesel inputs and outputs are in different locations.
7. Exhaust flange that bolts to Diesel engine is needed because gasser flange is different.
Hope this gives you an idea of what's ahead. Not trying to discourage you, but just giving you some facts.
Mike.

Thanks 1badluv that list,I bought this engine in an isuzu pickup(it was originally in a 84 s10) but the isuzu is rusted out so I want to swap it to the 4x4. The truck is complete with glow plugs ect,and the t5 2wd so my biggest question is do I just need a transfer case from a 4x4 t5 or will a t5 4wd off any size GM engine bolt to my bellhousing?

Ok, so more than one issue here. There seem to be some differences in the input shaft diameter (and maybe depth) on different T5 transmissions. We had someone who had a diesel bell housing for the T5, but had trouble getting it mated due to input shaft differences--maybe even length, I don't recall. The other issue is, if I'm not mistaken, the 4wd T5 may have its transfer case on the wrong side for your truck (but right for an S10). Caveat: I could be wrong about both of those, but maybe someone else can help here.

Jack

Would I be better off selling the bell housing and 2wd tranny and trying to get a isuzu tranny? As I'm thinking about it a 4 speed might be fine for me as I plan on running big tires although I'd prefer a 5 speed.
