Don't know if this post should be in 4x4 or Diesel section.

Listening to that little engine scream when doing 55 MPH is making me wonder when it's gonna blow apart. Besides it just would be better on fuel. Sure would like to get the RPM's down while cruising. I know that taller tires or a different rear gear would accomplish the goal, but I don't want to do a drag strip style launch to keep from stalling when taking off from a stop.

Is there such a thing as a "bolt on" overdrive unit for these critters?

Thanks all!

Tom

If you don't want to use larger tires, the only thing left is to find a transmission from an '86 or '87 4wd P'up (they were all 5-speed). And they don't just bolt up, you have to relocate the rear mount and modify the driveshaft. I'm not sure if the front driveline will require any modification, but this swap has been done. Finding the correct transmission is the hard part. Just had a similar conversation with another member here ("the dudster").

Jack,

Was hoping some sort of split axle setup existed. Last thing I want to do is turn the truck into a Frankenluv so I'll learn to live with the RPM's. Thanks again for helping!
