A little background. About four years ago bought a '79 4x4 luv. Lift, 32's, rollbar, sunroof, fuel cell, it was a dandy wheeler. Had to sell it and i've had the itch to get another one over since. Now, I've got the money and want to dive back in to the Luv world.

My goal- 4x4 luv with 35's and enough power to push em.

My plan so far is to buy a running, straight axled yota and a luv with a good body. My question to the experts on here is, what should be my route. Put the luv body on the toyota or put the yota axles and drivetrain in the luv? How many of you guys have actual experience with either? Any guidence/comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Danny

Honestly I would put the Toyota stuff on the LUV just because of the strength of the LUV's frame, fully boxed with 6 cross-members, one of the best stock frames you'll ever see. The Toyota's axles are the same width as the LUV's so that's not a problem only thing you'll have to do is extend the front of the frame a few inches so the leaf springs will bolt up but I'm not sure about how much work you'll have to do to the engine bay. Although if you put a 4 banger in it shouldn't be too much but a V6 will take some work.

Hope this helps you.

Sorry i didn't make it clear on my original post. I would be using the 4 banger and tranny out of the doner yota. Another question, is there a certain year of yota i should be looking for or will any standard length bed, pre 85, single cab yota work?

You just answered you own question- swap the LUV body to the running Toyota chassis.
'84 & '85 Toyotas had the upgraded differentials & trannies. Most '79 through '85 had 4.10 gears, but one year had 3.90's ('81?) and one year had 4.37's ('80?).

I would put the LUV body on the toy frame. I think it would be easier to do and parts easier to get. Have you considered a V6 toy chassis?

Im swaping my 1980 luv on a 1986 ford ranger frame, a little different. A lot more work than a toy or s10 swap. But I got a hell of a deal on a rolled ranger and it ran great. I upgraded with the ford V6 and the 5spd and i get EFI out of it to. But it is a lot more harder swap than the toy. you could fit a 350 in a luv know problem it all depends on what you want to do. A 4 banger will be a dog if you have 35s on it. Heres a link (viewtopic.php?f=33&t=24076)

Just about any aftermarket addition available for a Toyota pickup would still fit into the LUV body on the Toy frame. There is not nearly as much made specifically for the LUV frame.

This was my original goal for a 4x4 luv truck that would work great. This was going to be my daily/rock crawling/mud buggy....

chevy 350 motor (or 383 stroker) turbo 350 trans, np205 transfer case. Then i was going to drop in some toyota axles with 4:56 gear locked in the front, posi in the rear, with 35s. As for the right amount of lift just use chevy blazer leaf springs front and rear.

Then you will be able to push 35s with no prob and get 16 mpg :D
