80 mostly stock luv. 4x4 is great in 'low', but if I put in 'high' the shifter vibrates itself back to no 4x4. Currently using the tried and true redneck fix of a chunk of wood stuck between the seat and shifter to hold the 4wheel shifter in place.

Any tips on what to adjust/replace appreciated.

Under the 4X4 shifter boot, there is a spring that "holds" the shifter in 4 hi. Your spring is worn out or missing, probably.

Ah many thanks. i'll dig into that tonight. Never had to use 4x4 high before in this one, use low around the farm but it was snowin for the first time and I needed to use it on the roads.
