im planning on taking the CV axles out tomorrow and seeing if that fixes the issue.

is there any issue with driving the truck with no cv axles? if the problems go away, then i will replace the shafts, but at least it will allow me to have a working vehicle right now.

i will also change out the steering gear and hopefully it will also take care of the play in the steering wheel.

There's no problem running without the front axles. However, they're a pain to remove, and I really don't think they're the problem. For them to have an effect, you'd have to have a stuck hub or a stuck transfer case. I'd check for those first, before attacking the axles.

For the steering box, there's an adjustment that can tighten it up. I tightened mine a few years ago but I probably did it wrong. I did a real quick search and found this:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=17588&p=130135&hilit=adjust+steering#p130135

There's probably others.

Good luck. I feel for you guys that have to freeze your, ah, fingers off in the winter. Out here, we bitch if the temp gets below 50 degrees.

Drove the truck a little bit ago.

still have some cracking/popping when turned with the hubs locked and the 4wd off, but during straight ahead driving, the truck drives GREAT!

I STILL DON'T GET IT....

i do still believe the gearbox needs to be changed, but in the end, i have a feeling that the issue was a compounded mix of gearbox issues, cv axles and the driver side bearings.

it will still require more testing of course, but so far, it seems like so long as i have the 4wd off, im in the clear. :smt012 :smt017

i spoke too soon.

looks like it will still wander, but at least i found another gearbox. if that doesnt fix it, it's going to go on the back burner until i can figure it out, or just turn it into a project truck.

Well I was going to say Bearing but you got that one figured out. I had a bearing on my car go bad but it didn't have any play. It was so bad that it got the hub hot enough to weld a bolt to part of one of my brackets 8O . Other than that I would say CV joint. One going bad could cause it to start to lock up and pull that way just like your brake is sticking but that would only be if it was in 4wd. If not that then I would lean to some part of the steering. Is your tie rod adjusted to where it needs to be? If its been shaken out of proper adjustment say been unscrewed to where your wheel points more outwards than it should than that is a big problem. I would look into that as well.

So the problem is only there with the hubs locked?
