alright. everyone has basically said an SBC in a 4x4 LUV is a bad idea.
why?
what would have to be done to shoehorn a sbc into a 4x4? honestly im not in great need of the 4x4 to begin with so if i need to do some cutting and reworking im not going to loose any sleep over it. 2wd SBC LUV sounds more fun than 1.8L 4x4 luv. atleast IMO.'

with the t case removed and front driveline out what other modification would be needed to drop a sbc into a 4x4, pulling the front diff and converting to 4x2?

having the 4WD out put on the same side (usa passenger side) as what the LUVs have.

on top of that, the front 8 bolt is not meant for large amounts of power at all
as well as very limited gearing for the stock axils 4.11s or 4.55s from a 84/86 trooper
maybe a 5.12 from over seas......

you would need to go SAS to make things work with most tranys.
and have axils/drive lines that can Handel the power.

SAS would be much better in the first place, but yes im thinking im goin to have to swap over to 2wd to pull off a swap atleast for the time being, going to start off with a 350, more than likely a DANA 44 rear end and which ever tranny and driveline i pick up probably just a TH350 and shortened fullsize driveline to start. and build up from there. cant afford to go all out from the start, gotta start basic and upgrade

Theres no hang up about this just alittle more work too keep it 4x4. Just got through doing one of mine, just get yourself some toyota axles for the front and rear cut all the I/S off the front frame and install the front axle with the toyota spring's. If you go 4x4 or 2wd check out Powerbyace motor mtns and trans mtn it will make your life alot better. If you want a good narrow 9" for the rear try finding a Bronco( 70's) rear it's very narrow and get some back spaced rim's.

thank ya. best year range to source axles from? tryin to figure out how to set up a coilover front setup to help with the weight of the engine and improve the handling. i would like to keep it as much chevy as possible. swapping a chevy engine. hoping for some dana axles. planning a chevy inspired paint scheme, always been a chevy guy.. gotta make an isuzu made chevy a real chevy.

Nothing but a '79-'85 Toyota pickup has the same 6-bolt wheel pattern and the narrow 54" track width to match the LUV. Everything else will be wider, 1/2 ton chevy's are about 64". Absolute easiest SAS is Toyota front axle with leaves (most have 4.10 ratios), move the stock rear springs to SOA, you can keep the stock engine & tranny & change everything else in stages. If you are going to change evrything anyway it is easier to modify a 2wd, might pick up a 2wd body/frame, leave your 4wd alone to drive or sell- 4wd are worth more than 2wd.

It will be ALOT easier to do with a 2wd and don't cut corners with the motor & transmission mounts they don't cost that much and you'll like the way they bolt right up nicely. Read on here there's alot of info and help. You'll have to get the front up high enough too clear the oil pan from the front axle housing. Smokey
