hey guys, i want to add some lights to my rig, since i've been heading up into the mountains alot lately, but i need some help.

i already upgraded the alternator to a 50 amp but i'm not sure if that is enough.

so here is my small list of questions.

1.) how do i determine amperage usage/draw/load on the alternator
2.) what is a good DURABLE light set with minimal fuss on installation?
3.) what would be the best location for installation?

thanks in advance guys!

As for point number 1. Power = Current x Voltage. So a 55W bulb running on 12 V draws between 4 and 5 amps. Or, with a 50 amp alternator, you can have a total of 50 x 12 = 600 Watts. Pretend that the whole truck on it's own uses 30 amps ( you used to have a 30 amp alternator, right?) That means with a 50 amp alt you can add 20 amps of lights, or 20 x 12 = 240W of extra lights.

spent a few bucks and picked up a set of blazer driving/fog lights a few days ago. they use h3 55w halogen bulbs. so per the formula you gave me, these will draw about 5 amps. just as a rule of thumb, since they are wired in parallel, does that mean they draw a total of 10 amps together, or does the wiring specification change the draw amount?

just finished installing them a few minutes ago. hopefully, they will get the job done...
