well i replaced the inner wheel bearing because it was totally rusted. and when i put everything back together, my front end started making some kind of humming sound when i would reach about 25MPH. so i grab the tire that i replaced the wheel bearing on, and the whole thing just wobbles side to side and up and down. i dont know what i did wrong. i had the whole exploded view of the hub and everything looked fine. everything has been torqued to specs. so im asking you guy if this problem has ever happened to you and if you might know what i may have screwed up on... i wanted to get some input from you guys before i start tearing into the hub again....

I see this post has been out here a while. Did you get the problem fixed yet?

did you secure the hub nut retaining ring with the small screws? it's not based upon torque, you must measure it based on preload tension. you must use a scale (weight) pull tool to measure what it's supposed to be at. i can look at the specs later this afternoon.

no dog trainer i have not fixed the problem yet. Figuarus i do remember screwing in the retainer ring but i never did any kind of tension measuring... the manual i have does not give me very detailed instructions on h ow to do this so i just went off the exploded view i had of the hub and just went from there. i am now hearing a loud humming sound in the font end when i hit about 25 MPH. and the wheel bearings are brand new. well they might be shot now.... but ya problem still not fixed. i took my wheel off and i can grab the hub itself and move it up and down and it moves the rotor too.... i had a shop press in the bearings for me too.... so i have no idea what i did wrong any info would be great.....

ok, this is the procedure that is listed in the book. (keep in mind it's for an 80)

First off, im assuming you have front wheel drive (4WD)

take the hubs off, then proceed as follows

turn hub 2 to 3 turns and loosen the wheel bearing nut just enough so it can be turned with the fingers

tighten said nut (finger tight) and make sure there is no free play (up down left right, in out)

use a pull scale, hooked around a wheel stud, tighten the nut until it reads between 2 to 4 lbs of force BEFORE the hub begins to rotate.
make sure the brake pads are NOT in contact with the brake rotor face.

install the nut keeper with the screw and put it all back together

that SHOULD be it, but keep in mind that if you have damaged the wheel bearings at all, they will need to be replaced
