Uh, where did you find your new CV's? Mine have been shot for quite some time now, and I've been having a bit of a time finding them.

Could you take a few pics while you're doing that?

prepare yourself, its not fun.

i had to do it on a 87 isuzu pickup i had, and i had a 2 post lift at my disposal.

lots of bleeding knuckles and many 4 letter words yelled, and the dammit wrench flew more than once.

but me and another guy got it done in about 4 hrs, of course the first 3 hrs were spent trying to find out why the son of b_tch wouldnt come out, and the last hr was dropping the front end and doing it the right way!

lol, sounds like this is another one that's gonna haveta wait til spring... I have access to the facilities, but dang that sounds bad. Removing the front end? If anyone wants, I'll take pics of the process.

I'll try it... hopefully it doesn't have to wait til spring.
Thanks for the information.

Can I just take the hub/shock absorber off, or better yet, how do you do it?

Can't find the link so i'll do a brief how to.

1. Place truck on jack stands and remove wheel
2. Remove locking hub and take off cv shaft retaining circlip.
3. Undo two bolts holding brake caliper , remove and tie up out of way.
4. Release Top and Bottom ball joints and remove spindle/rotor.
5. Peel back boot on inner cv joint and remove wire retaining ring (see pic below
6. Cv shaft should now pull out of cup, replace with new.

No need to drop front pumpkin/axel assy unless pictured cup is badly damaged.

They sound like refurbish or or rebuilt CV axles. Nothing wrong with that I had my daughters done at a place that just did that. It cost less than I could buy the parts for and they guaranteed it for 1 year...

I did my 4x4 like above when I had it.. I replaced the cv joint back then.

Dang... lol, with 198,000 miles on the truck, it sounds to be about time for the CV's to be replaced/rebuilt. Does anyone know where I could get the bearings from? And, because the cup is a wear surface, wouldn't that present problems with the new bearings wearing incorrectly?
Thanks for the directions Oz. I'll try that first.
Oh, and how can you tell whether or not the cups are too worn?

I haven't had to replace the ones in my Luv but I have replaced some in other vehicles. I haven't had to replace a cup yet. I inspect mine to make sure where the berings ride inside the cup still has a definitive line and isn't rounded out. (it would have had to slip to do that or have been SEVERELY/DANGEROUSLY worn). The pic that OZ posted looks good from the pic. Look for any other damage like cracks, pits and any other thing that doesn't look normal. Make sure there isn't to much play in and out or up and down with the cup either. I'm sure my time is coming for my Luv as well.

lol, sounds like I'm gonna get to drop the front end... My CV's make a nasty crunching sound when I turn very sharp. I'll take step by step photos when I get around to it. I'll still wait to see the inside of the cup before I get into that surgery though.
Thanks for the advise.

BTW, NAPA says that new CV shafts are $300 ea.
AutoZone says $100 ea.
Checker/Schucks/Kragen says $150 ea.

Also, it says that it fits mid '80s Troopers too.

NAPA says $300 each... 8O. That hurts since I buy everything I can from NAPA. Hopefully it will be a long time before I need to replace mine. Hell I would think we could buy a toyota front axle assembly and and do whatever fabrications necessary to install and make it work for cheaper than $600. Maybe it's time I look into that as an alternative for when my time comes.

My local shop told me he can get mine rebuilt for about $55. each.

Mine seem fine, but the boots are torn and it's been through mud and dirt with the torn boots. I'm going to be redoing the whole front end here soon and was wondering if I can clean, re-grease, and install new boots on my cv's. How complex are cv joints? Can I get in there with brake cleaner or solvent well enough to get them clean?
