ok my 1980 chevy luv 4x4 has good power when its in 4x4 drive. the only problem is sometimes i have to hold the shifter down so it wont "pop out of gear". what could be the cause of this? this is my first 4x4 :D
Thank you

There is a spring that goes around the 4x shifter to a bracket on the tranny that holds it in 4hi. It prolly just broke off, not sure where you can pick one up

Yea, it's just under the boot. Mine was missing when I got the truck, and I had the same problem.

well mines there and its good. i think it could be in the transfer case which i hope its not =[. I may try to shorten the shift linkage to see if that helps a little. any suggestions?

Is it a stock 4x4? Just a shot in the dark, does it have a body lift on it? If it does, that can cause the shifter to not engage completely because the hole has moved.

If it's stock, and the spring is there, then it may be something internal.

Mine would walk out of 4 hi with the hubs locked. With them unlocked, it would stay in 4 hi. It was missing the spring. It works fine now.
Have you tried it with the hubs unlocked?

I have'nt tryed it with them in the "free" position but i always thought that it wouldnt work if it wasnt locked.

With the hubs in "free", and the case in 4 hi or low, the front shaft will turn with the case, but not deliver and power to the front wheels because they are not locked. Make sense? So yes, it's useless to run this way.
Although, I will use 4 low, unlocked, sometimes to utilize the low gears/speed/power, when 2wd is good enough but torque at a low speed is needed.

My after market boot puts just enough pressure on the shifter to push it out of 4 hi. But I have a body lift too.

its the same MSG trans as mine just not a 5 speed....

the spring is streched more in 2WD mode than in 4 HI and LO
and sence the auto spends more time in 2WD the spring is streched over the years.
thus theres less pull with the older spring.

the only places i know of that can get the spring new are.....
the very few isuzu auto dealers that have contenued to sell origanal isuzu parts and......

Jerry over on the isuzupup.com site, he has a lisense to sell origanal spec isuzu parts.
for about 10%~ over his cost, he lives in Georgia.

hes retierd from the isuzu corp he was a USA isuzu auto trainer.
what ever your queston, he will have a answer :!:
