Im not sure bout 88 but i have used parts from 84/85 Troopers.
Engine, trans , diffs , steering box, brakes, are interchangeable.

'88 & newer Troopers had different motor, trans, clutch setup, front & rear differentials, rear brakes, & 4" wider track. '88 & newer pickup & Trooper everything pretty much same. Early '87 & older Troopers had the same front & rear differentials (but 4.56 gear ratio) as an '80 LUV, trans swaps ('86 & '87 are 5spd's), same cable clutch system, '86 & '87 motors will swap but require engine compartment mods, '84 & '85 direct fit, Trooper track is 4" wider.
Easiest Trooper (any year) swap items into an '80 LUV would be the upper control arms (more travel and/or lift) & the bigger front calipers & rotors.

Just to add the upper control arms on the 87 late and up will not fit the LUV's ,the power steer box's will fit but you need to use the early 87 and older pitman arm.The early Trooper rotors and calipers fit and the rotors are way lighter vented ones.

The 2.3 & 2.6 engines will bolt up to the LUV trans.

I have Trooper upper control arms,5 spd trans and power steering on my truck.
The parts came off an 87 late model so the Upper arms didn't fit so went to a wrecking yard and got early ones and a early pitman arm to fit the steering box.

If you look under my post you will find some write ups on the swap and some pic's.

84/85 troopers are a 1.9L 85~HP and all have a 4 speed,
gas door in frunt of rear passenger tire tank is mid ship mounted and only holds 10~ gallens
all 84/85 models are long two door.

the 86/87 ones have the 2.3L 110~HP rare 2.2L T\D 85HP and all have a 5 speed.
all troopers 86 and newer
have a rear tank thats 20+ gallens filler behind passenger side tire.
86 is the first 4 door year, 88 is the last long two door year.
89 is the rare short 2 door year.

all 84/86 troopers have the same axils as 4X4 luv/pups JUST THERE 4.55 GEARS NOT 4.11s

If you have a chance to get an 86 trooper "GRAB" it as almost everything on it will fit you 80 4X4.

well the guy screwed me over on the 86 trooper. it has no title so i have no way of getting it to a junk yard for they will not take it without a title for when i am done with it.

so now i think the project im going to try to do is take a toyota chassis and put my luv body on it. i know theres
a sections on here where a guy did the same thing with pics and steps for how to do it. the only problem is it doesnt come with a motor or tranny/tranfer case. and i dont want to run the stock 1.8 with the 4spd. but the guy im getting the chassis
from is a friend of mine and should sell it for a good price so i might still have money left for a motor and tranny :) i heard that the 22ret is a pretty good motor but the stock turbo isnt that good and they only get a top of 150 hp. but i hear the toyota tacoma motor is a good motor to swap if it has a turbo. anybody have any ideas on what i should do?
