Hello everyone, as you can tell I am new here and just bought a 1979 Luv 4x4 for $150 (frame is good but body is rusty), this is just going to be a cheap play toy. All stock, but the head gasket is bad (called auto zone and the head gasket is only $20 an could be delivered by Sat. am) so I should be 4 wheeling with this thing by the Saturday night. My question is what kind of capabilities does this truck have is stock trim. I have seen a lot of pics and videos on here but I don't think any of those trucks were stock. I am used to 4000+lbs 4x4 Full size chevy trucks. But I'm thinking this thing is pretty light and could be OK with the awesome 80hp 8O . I do have the stocks rims off my 2003 Escalade (chrome 17's) :ebiggrin (or I should say my wife's Escalade) and from what I can find they will fit on the stock lugs, so even if I do get stuck right away atleast the truck will look good!!!
I am picking the truck up tomorrow or Thursday, so I will post some pics when I get a chance (I know you will all be jealous  ).

Thanks, Garrett

I can say that I've never gone rock crawling with my Luv, but I can also say that they have very low-geared axles and, in my opinion, can climb almost anything. They are simply stout little trucks. :)

My '79 4x4 does pretty decent with the stock WORN OUT engine. I've never been stuck, but then I use it when needed out hunting and normal use. I don't do alot of Mud boggin anymore.

Well I picked it up tonight and the body is full of cancer. But runs, (actually even with the head gasket out it powered itself onto the trailer and drove off). I am now rather excited to get the new head gasket in it and see what it can do. This little truck should be alot of fun!!!
I will post pics hopefully tomorrow.

Later, Garrett

Hey Garrett,

I don't know about putting 17's on a stock setup. I have a two inch body lift with 225/75/15 tires. I would not want to go much bigger unless I cut the fenders. Eventually I'm looking at some suspension lifts, but my next step is to rebuild my motor. =)

Hello,
Well project LUV Mudder got put off a few days (my little brother spung a bearing in his 67 Mustang and needed it for a wedding tomorrow, I love the fact that he has 8K into his 428CJ engine and 67 camaro with a extra parts 355 schools it :ebiggrin) . So now thats back together and running the LUV goes in the shop Sunday.
The 17's don't fit (front hubs are too big), so it looks like the 31" Thornbirds are going on it. I know they won't fit but like I said the body is very nasty and I do own a saws all  !!! This is going to be fun.

if its 4.11 gears swapping to 4.55s would be a good up-grade (for mostly or all off road use) you whould hate it as a DD.

31" tires whould be good to. the 4.55 whould make the rpms with 31s about the same as stock.

also no need for 5 speed up-grade when under 45mph
--------------------------------------------
granted my trooper is 1,000LBs~ more than a 4x4 LUV or pup, it has the same axils 10bolt rear 8 frunt, and brakes and same low range gearing.
"as far as i know" all MSG 4x4 transes 4 or 5 speed have the same low range gear.
i can handle any road a "stock" 1/2 ton 4X4 can, and more sence im shorter wheel base and not as wide.

My 79 4X4 Climbs hills nicely, and mud bogs great. Doesn't have much suspension travel for ruts, rocks and such though.
But cruising around in 4X4 low, that things just keeps walking just about anywhere you wanna go.
But I am a total novice when it comes to wheeling, so take it for what it's worth. :D

Well an update for anyone whose wants to know another LUV has been brought back to life. I started the engine on Thursday night (had the head resurfaced, had to take .023 off), and the engine runs great needs a little fine tuning but I am happy with it. The TSL Thornbirds will not fit on the stock rims  but I knew that! I found a set of mag rims with 3.5" backspacing and I think those will work with the side lugs on the TSL's. But I am a new Daddy as of yesterday at 1:10pm (Grant 8lbs 4oz.) so the truck will have to be on hold for a week or two.

Later, Garrett

Well I got a chance to get out of the house for a few hours today and finished the LUV. Plasma to the front bottom of the fenders and mount the Thornbirds ( :x one needs a tube). Got a chance to go wheeling with it for about an hour. This thing is fun and challenging, 1st gear 4 lo and just about 4000rpm hit the hole and just floor it, it was the most fun me and my brother had together in a while.

I started in a little mud and was just crawling through it and by the end we were going through sloppy 18" ruts and about 30" of water and this was just a trial run. The truck has 3 year old gas and I think could use a timing adjustment. Didn't get a chance to get new pictures yet but here are some the guy I bought it from took.

Garret congrats on being a dad and for bringing life to your truck too. I enjoy seeing when a project comes together. =)

With a little trimming and turning the torsions a little you can clear 33's. The ride is a little rough, but if you can handle it, you will be surprised where you can go. Have fun.

I really like these little trucks. 4L @ 1 is slow enough to get out and walk, and if you've got a buddy with ya, you can pick up the rear end to get un-stuck. The engine is great, with plenty of power (yeah, 80hp doesn't sound like much, but with it only pushing 4k lbs?). I put an electric fan on front of mine, and the difference is pretty amazing. It would over heat just sitting, plus the mechanical fan takes about 5 hp to turn. So, that 6% loss does make a difference. Have fun with the new (well, to you) LUV!
