my 4x4 luv cant climb! when ever going up a steep uphill climb it stalls out even in first gear. i cant seem to get it fast enough going up hill to keep it in gear, i dont know what to do. also it maxes out at 55, i though that was normal since i read about it being really slow. but i just read on hear that they go normally any where from 65 to 70. could this be the problom and what can i do? any advise would be good

Even my gutless 75 will get up to 70 eventually.

But it does take awhile.

When it maxes out at 55 does it run solid or does it act like it is dying off or sputtering? If it is dying out it is likely not getting enough fuel to the carb. First thing to look at is the fuel filter back by the fuel tank. Get a new one on there and see if that helps. Next would be the fuel pump. There is a filter inside it, but it could also be going bad. With all the ethanol mixed in with gas these days a lot of these some older parts (like the rubber bits in a fuel pump) are getting eaten.

The other possible problem I can think of is the points in the distributor. They can give similar symptoms if they are worn down or pitted.

My stock (80 4x4) Hitachi carb worked like crap unitl I rebuilt it and even then wasn't great. It was always crapping out and stalling. It seamed to me that even after the rebuild the accelorator pump was week and wouldn't deliver much fuel. I finally put a weber on it and it runs much better. I live in the country on some acreage and have a couple of steep hills to test on. After the weber, it made a much better run up the hill. Before, it would stall out or start to sputter and I would have to back down and try again. I would still make it after burning half the clutch up. The weber is a very simple carb too. My truck is all stock except for a little larger tire size and body lift. Oh yeah, I don't have to worry about emissions crap so all that is gone too. I honestly didn't notice much difference when I removed all that tho. Mine is not a daily driver, in fact it rarely goes on the road so most of the time is spent in 1st or 2nd gear and low rpm's. Recently it has been on the road more as I am trying to fix it up abit.

Each state is in charge of thier own smog regulations. Some require it and some don't.

Rondog is right, we Oklahomans don't care if the rest of the world can breath as long as our cars run good. lol Seriously there are quite a few Cali owners who have webers and pass emissions.

yeah as far as my title is conserned i have a 81 but every thing on my car says 80 along with all the parts/ the differences between 80's and 81's. but since the tittle says 81 the emissions in az says i have to have a cat. even thoug its actually a 80, and with a 80 im not suppose to have one. but i dont know how to get the car tittle changed over so i just got a cat in it. did that make sence or was i just rambling on....

It's going to be extremly obvious if your truck is an 80 or 81 just by looking at it, 2 completly different body styles. Do you have any pics of it?

It's probably your fuel pump.

I had the same problem. The truck would die going up a steep hill. The problem was that the fuel pump had very low pressure and wasn't enough to pump up to the engine when the truck was on a hill.

This is going to sound stupid, but try backing up the hill. This puts the engine lower than the fuel pump. If the truck runs fine without dying, the problem is the fuel pump.

Uh, before you tear too far into it, try advancing the timing. Mine would dog out (not stall) going up TH grade. Advanced the timing, and it keeps 55-60 for the entire 1/4 mile @ 6% grade. Shoot, on flat ground, I've had mine to around 95-100. Not real sure on the numbers (speedo only goes to 85 ;), but I've had other people clock me...
On the emissions problem, take it to the DMV and have them check it out. They oughtta be able to tell an'80 from an '81. Heck, it even says what emission standards it should pass right on the inside of the hood! Or move to OK...

Might also be a loose vacuum hose. Hook it up to a vacuum tester. There is one on the right hand side of the carb that might be suspect.
Hold up, is it manny or auto?

I have never seen a Luv 4x4 with a automatic transmission. Well not a stock one.
