I got a 80' 4x4 and the driver side halfshaft/cv is making noise when i turn, with it in 4wd. Is the joint rebuildable??? If so where can I get the parts. If not where can I get a new one. Or would I have to take it to a driveline shop to get rebuilt? Also where is the 4wd light switch at, my 4wd light doesn't work. I know I have to check the bulb first, but if the light works where is the switch? Thanks again in advance. Lee

Hello
The front axle shaft isn't rebuildable. There are no parts available seperate except for the cv bellows, grease, and clamps. You can get reman shafts from NAPA. They come with a 1 year warranty. The whole front diff assembly will have to be removed in order to get the old cv shaft out. Thats correct the front hub, steering linkage, drive shaft from transfer case, and control arms will need to be removed/taken apart to replace this axle. It's a weekend job. Once the cv axle is out of the diff a bearing has to be pressed off the old shaft and put onto the new shaft. Order replacement outer axle seals. The old ones will be brittle and weak. Just cheap insurance against a possile leak later on. Don't forget to get some fresh 90w gear oil. About 2 quarts should do it. Hope this helps.
Mike.

I guess it's gonna be awhile before I fix it then. :) I can always keep that hub unlocked. It would be a good time, when I pull the shaft, to go throught the entire front end and make everything new. While I'm in there I'm gonna install a lincoln locker in the front. Might as well do everything right the first time, so I don't have to do it again later. Thanks for the posts people. Lee
