Hey all,
I have an '80 LUV 4x4, and am currently running 235/75/15's on it. I have already cranked up the torsion bars and added longer shackles in the rear. I am planning on a body lift in the future to fit 31's. My question is this: can the stock 4x4 system handle 31's? I figure that it will perform fine in 4-low, but I'm worried about the strength of the transfer case and front axle components with the bigger tires.
Thanks,
Rich

Even with the t-bars cranked up or a body lift, 31's are a stretch for the stock front fenderwell openings. Unless yo're not afraid of some tin snipping on the lower rear of the fenderwell.

Secondly, the stock 1.8L engine may not have enough juice to power those 31's. I was unsatisfied with 31's on my last LUV, 235's were more reasonable to me. Swamper makes some interesting treads in the 29" to 30" range.

it depends too if you;re getting TRUE 31" tall tires, i have seen some (and had some) that measured to about 28.5" and there are some brands out there that measure a bit taller (super swampers) there's give and takes to this business 8)

-big tires, less power, need for regearging/clearancing. better approach angle

-smaller tires, better power, less need for regearing/clearancing. worse approach angle.

You have to decide what you really want, if it's big tires or go with smaller tires and be able to handle them.

Are you pretty new to wheeling? What are you planning on doing with the truck? Daily Driving and wheeling? or soul wheeler? that will help in your decision for tires and size. BTW, what size and style are you looking at? If you have ANY questions about this junk PM and let me know, I'm more than willing to give my advice and guidance whenever

I am running 33X12.50 on mine and have plenty of power. My truck has a G200 in it and 4.56 gears, and gets around on and off road with no problems.
