Whats the best front end and rear end to use for rockcrawling. I'am putting in a 327, and something that can take tork. It's a high performance engine and I have to gear down so it can perform for rockcrawling. :?:

327s No mater what you due will not have the torque of a 350 so the choice of axles is a little better. But still Dana 60 front and rear or a 14 bolt rear 60 front.

The New Venture Model 4500 transmission offers the best possible gear ratio available for off-the-road conditions. The extremely low first gear ratio along with the overdrive 5-speed combination makes this transmission very desirable. The transmission was introduced in both the GM and Dodge vehicles 1992. The NV4500 is a 5-speed, constant-mesh, manual transmission. All forward gears are fully synchronized. The ultra low 1st gear has a ratio of 5.61:1 and the 5th gear is an overdrive gear that has a ratio of .73:1. The transmission case is made of a cast-iron material and the gear case cover is an aluminum alloy. The low profile of the top cover provides excellent clearance for 4WD after market conversions. Unlike the older GM and Ford 4-speeds, the shift tower location has been relocated farther back, approximately 9 1/2" from the bell housing on the transmission case, to provide for easier accessibility.

The New Process 435 transmission was used in Chrysler (1963-1993 ), Ford (1964-1987 ) and G.M. (1963-1972 ) trucks. These transmissions have a 6.68 to 1 1st gear ratio in all three applications. While Chrysler and G.M. applications also offered a 4.56 to 1 ratio. The Ford versions adapted real well into the early Broncos (1966-1977 ) and late Jeep CJs (1980-1986 ) with only minor modifications. While other conversions require more modifications including drive shafts lengths. The NP 435 is a HD transmission with cast iron case and aluminum cover. It is synchronized 2nd through 4th gear with sliding gear for 1st and reverse. They ran a solid cluster on needle bearings and a tapered main drive gear bearing on most applications. Our rebuilt transmissions include all new bearings, seals, gaskets and whatever it takes to make them a good reliable transmission. These transmissions are available as stock replacement or as conversions.

SM 465 The GM Muncie SM 465 was used in GM trucks from 1968 to 1991. These transmissions work real well in 1980 and later CJ’s when doing GM V8 engine swaps or replacing the blown up stock transmissions between a GM engine and the Dana 300 transfer case. The SM 465 is a top loaded HD transmission with iron case and cover. It is synchronized 2nd through 4th. It has a 6.54 ratio sliding 1st gear

SM 420 The GM Muncie SM 420 transmission was used in GM trucks from 1948 to 1967. These transmissions are popular with "ROCK CRAWLERS’ because of it’s 7.06 to 1 in 1st gear

Also note transfer case side and front axle pumpkin meed to be on the same side.

Hey numb nuts, errr, i mean comfortably numb :P j/k. I would suggest going wtih dana 60's if you can afford them, a 14 bolt is a ditch digger and will be more work than a dana 60 rear in the long run to setup/mod to your liking. 8) the 60 front is going to cost you for a stcok one, around $1000-$1200 (in our area) then it only goes up from there! FYI, I run a HP dana 44 and ford 9" rear in my S-10 with a cop car 350. I have been known to romp on it a little before, but i am mostly timid in the rocks. So if you are like me and take it easy a HP dana 44 might also be an option for you. but if you want balls to wall, get a dana 60 and put Bobby Longs CV's in it. 8) 8) 8)
