would the trooper mid 80"ish transmission 5spd be a direct bolt in for the 4x4 luv. would this be a good swap or would i need to replace the gearing in the axles. i am looking to get a higher hwy gearing (fuel economy)for driving over 55mph.. and i have read in some posts that the toyota staright axles area type of conversion to be done to the luv, are they stronger , more reliable or just flexier on the trail.? thanks

'87 & older Troopers use the same MSG tranny & cable clutch system as the LUV. Gear ratios are near identical to the 4x LUV 4sp except with a .855 5th overdrive. The 5sp is longer than the 4sp, so the drive shafts need adjusted, the rear tranny mount may need relocated. Also maybe the shifter holes in the floor pan.

I believe there a mid-year point on 87, where the earlier model works, but before that the Trooper Tranny will work. On my Luv I also got the drivlign that goes to the front axl (the stock one will be too short as the trooper tranny is a longer than the Stock) and also the removeable crossmember off the Trooper. I had a shop shorten the driveline and had to cut a hole in the floor for the 4WD shifter. Check out the Drivetrain part of the forum, there are several post on this type of swap. =)

all 84, 85 troopers had a 4 speed trans with a 1.9 gas engine.
no need for a O\D with less than 90 hp and 100 ft-LBs in somthing thats 4,000lbs
yes all troopers 86 and 87 had a 5 speed trans with a 2.3 gaser or the 2.2 T-diesel.

the MUA from a 88, 91 trooper is a much stronger trans.
