seriously though, find a 4.3l with tranny/t-case or v8 350 with tranny/t-case, build new d-shafts and get going 8)

i dont klnow if you ever did anythign with this or got anymore info, and i know its kinda an old post, but go with a 2.6 isuzu 4 banger 2.3 carb intake and distributor, decent weber, then the 2.6 exhaust manifold is a header style so you can run a dual setup out of it or just run the tubing to what ever you want with it, but that in my and most others opinions is the best way to go, the stock motor with emissions and a/c has 120hp stock (with efi of coarse) but without a/c or any emissions stuff a good running 38/38 weber carb, mabye a header or a well tuned exhaust, match ported intake/exhaust manifolds, hot coil, and a good cam you would have yourself a pretty zippy 4 banger and the best part is... the worst you miht have to do is slightly modify tyhe motor mounts form the 2.6 motor to work right since the 2.6 will bolt right onto the stock tranny..

Wow! Where have I heard that before Dusty? (Hey at least we know you're payin' attention...lol)

But Dusty is right...in a 4X4 you are kinda limited to what will bolt up to your tranny, so the best/cheapest/easiest swap to get the most bang for your buck would be a 2.6 with the 2.3 carb intake and distributor. It will pretty much drop right in and hook up to everthing you have with a minimum of massaging and effort.

And the completely stock 2.6 engine with emissions intact and A/C hooked up is rated at 125 hp...just for the record...lol So remove all that crap, bolt on a used weber 38/38 (that you can get on ebay and rebuild cheap - if necessary), throw in a cam, add a header, high output coil, etc. - and you will be pleasantly impressed I'm sure.

BTW...the completely stock 1.8 is supposed to put out 75 hp with all of the emissions and the A/C intact - but I wouldn't make any large bets on that...lol

Oh I pay attention, ive read this info enough its been drilled into my brain... good stuff though...
I plan on getting me a 2.6 engine built up after much deliberation, i decided that the old addige is true... "there is no replacement for displacement" (except for a turbo 8) or more cash than you can shake a stick at)... I dont know if you have decided on somethign yet but if not i would really consider this...
And taz, i found the 120hp info from a 1981-1991 chiltons i have... and would you believe it the impulse G200 and the pu'p G200 says have 2 different displacements lol...

Back to the thread though.. the easiest/cost sensible way to get power ina luv is this route, and there is alot of people that have know how and somewhat of an aftermarket for it...

them are some good engines, but this guy was wanting somethign on a budget, and the 2.6l Isuzu engine may not be a v6 but at 125hp with stock a/c and all the emissions stuff on it, i think by removing it, adding a hotter spark, mabye even a cam, but more over a good weber like the 38/38... im willing to bet you could pump out about 150+ Hp from this engine, thats not including if you take the time to match port the carb-to-inlet ports, intake/exhaust manifold-to-head ports, and a little timing advance  ... i personally would rather have somethign that basically fits and gives good mileage over the v6, but thats just my $.02, i say to each his own :ebiggrin ... besides i dont even know if this guy is even following this post anymore lol....

Yeah...it can be a bit confusing.

The early Pups had only one engine that some manuals say is a 2.0 - and it is a 1.9 G200...and they put two engines in the early Impulses that some manuals say are both a 2.0 - but one is a 2.0 (turbo) and the other is a 1.9 (carb). The 1.9 is a G series engine and the 2.0 isn't. The 2.0 is in the same basic engine family as the 2.3 and the 2.6.

Nothing from the 2.0 will work for the G180 or the G200. I think it's kind of an oddball engine, because they only put them in the early turbo'ed Impulses for a few years. They easiest way to tell is the G200 has "G200' cast right on the front of the head and the driver's side (unless you are in aussieland - then it's the passenger side) of the block.

The 1.8, 1.9, 2.3, and 2.6 will all bolt up to a stock Luv 4x4 tranny/transfer case - but the 2.6 with the 2.3's carb intake and electronic distributor would be the best replacement engine if you are looking for a not-too-expensive power upgrade and clearly would be the cheapest/best bang for your buck. You would be easily doubling your hp/torque - possibly even more if you built it right.

Any other engine and tranny/transfer case combo would work too - but it's going to take a lot more modifying and time/$$ to do it.
