My wonderful Haynes manual has nothing about removing the axles. I could just start ripping stuff out and eventually get it, but I'd rather get you guys' input on how to do it right.

Where they mate into the wheel, they are filthy and caked with dirt and debris so I need to replace them.

This is not a permanent set up. But, if you need to buy some time and still protect your cv joints you can get universal boots from Autozone. They're about $12 each and they can be put on without completely taking out your cv joint. They are not seamless and will allow water to get in so they're not good for mudding, but they will at least hold the grease in.

The instructions don't apply to my truck for some reason..

Where he says there is a snap ring with a break in it to let the inner and outer races come apart-mine looks like it is pressed in-there is NO snap ring!!

Look here: http://www.4x4wire.com/isuzu/tech/CVboots/r0101021.jpg
Where you see him prying out the circlip-there is no circlip in mine-just a solid metal chunk with rounds for the balls to slide..

My truck is sitting on property that isn't mine and the wheel is completely off...

Three words come to my mind: "NOT USER SERVICEABLE".

FANTASTIC!!

Anyone know anything about the 1979 4WD CV boot change? I cannot figure this out. I have broken two screwdrivers trying to pry the inner race and balls out.

I really appreciate any help!!

Well, I got both axle shafts off. I am going to bring them to a shop tomorrow to see if they can be rebuilt.

There is a clip on the side where the differential is.

Unfortunately, that doesn't help my filthy joint where it connects to the wheel. I don't think there is any way I can get it apart enough to be able to clean it out-and trust me-it needs to be cleaned out. Autozone can't even get a new axle, and the rebuild place closed down (The phonebook was old).

If I put the wheels back together without the axles, I don't know how I would plug the holes so no dirt entered the wheel bearings.

I have cleaned up cv joints before using compressed air and a solvent gun. Axel's out of early pups and troopers also fit the Luv. A engine freeze plug may be suitable to block the hole to keep dirt out

I got prices for warranted ones, $70 each side, with a $90 core charge each side. Do you happen to know which years pup and trooper? Autozone can't even get the axles, and Kragen and Napa are almost the same price.
